Meet Brian Kennedy of Kenneco Creative

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Kennedy.

Brian, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always been interested in television and film production. I have leaned toward creative ways to tell stories and present information in a multitude of fields. As an educator, I used this skillset to create unique multimedia lessons that challenged my students. As the need grew in schools, I began to pioneer video and broadcast programs that went well beyond the traditional video announcements. I took over a program in Austin that entered the world of broadcast news for high school students. We branched into film production and became the first high school in the country to produce a full-length feature film. Several of our short films were featured at SXSW.

In Far North Dallas, I took a fledgling program and grew it into one of the largest in the country, producing a live daily newscast seen around the world, sports programming, and a comedy talk show that caught the attention of CBS and Stephen Colbert. The program won 5 Emmys in my time there and I was named national broadcast adviser of the year. While teaching and passing on the craft to high school students, I also branched out and started doing freelance work for Dallas corporations, including AT&T Performing Arts Center and the American Heart Association, and charity events in the LGBTQ community (Black Tie Dinner, Legacy Counseling, and Dallas Red Foundation). I have worked as a multimedia journalist with KDAF33 and Dallas Voice Television. Having built programs and taught them at all levels, I am well versed in videography, editing, motion graphics, and producing. At my heart, I am a storyteller who is always on the lookout to tell stories of both individuals and the city of Dallas.

Has it been a smooth road?
There have been challenges along the way. In videography, people are often looking for free work, which makes it difficult to thrive in a business sense. Technology is always changing and keeping up with changes in equipment and costs can be a lot to manage on your own. From an educational standpoint, there are challenges of casting your vision for what can be done.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Kenneco Creative – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in all aspects of video production from writing, videography, and editing. I have a background in journalism, so I am a strong interviewer and can get to the heart of what your business is looking for. I am an individual freelancer, so I am flexible to meet the needs of the client and do not carry a lot of overhead in the job. I understand the business and I understand people. I have a masters in counseling from SMU in Dallas and that allows me to read what people want in their story. I am an educator and have excellent communication skills to give clients peace of mind as we walk through a project. My quick editing skills and commitment to your needs set me apart. Most of my projects can be completed in a 24-48 turnaround.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Dallas is a unique hidden gem that has so much sprawl that many people do not understand its history. Dallas has a rich development history and underlying character that is often lost. We tear down our great architecture and allow stories to get buried as time goes by. Dallas seems to have no sense of preservation. I like that the city is growing and starting to be a destination for people around the world to live, work and play, I think there has been great efforts to revitalize downtown and make it unique. Dallas has the fifth largest LGBT population in the country and it is a thriving community that many people are unaware of. Dallas is home and I have seen the many changes over time that make this the place to be.
