Meet Brian Morris of Animal Hospital Southwest in Fort Worth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Morris.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Brian. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started in Veterinary Medicine at 15 as a Kennel Technician. I was saving up for my first car. I bought my first car and immediately quit. I did odd jobs for Animal Hospital Southwest over the next 12 years while living in College Station and Houston

After High School I went to A&M and then to the University of Houston for Law School. I passed the bar and realized pretty quickly that practicing law was not something that I had any desire to do. The law interested me more philosophically than practically.

I started working from Houston with Dr. Morris, the owner of the practice, on projects that helped pet owners and eventually started coming up to Fort Worth every two weeks to help out in any way I could. I moved to Fort Worth in 2015 and started working in the physical hospital full time doing anything I can to help pet owners and staff.

I found that I enjoy helping our paraprofessional staff develop skills in order to help more pets. I also really enjoy helping pet owners have the best possible relationship they can have with their pets. I go home every evening with so much more to look forward to the next day than I ever did when I was practicing law.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No smooth roads here. I received a degree in a completely unrelated field and found that it was not an enjoyable profession for me. I struggled to get through school. I struggled with the decision to move the life I built in Houston back to Fort Worth.

I believe every struggle is an opportunity. I have had so many opportunities to make real differences in people’s lives since beginning this journey and I am grateful for it every day.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Animal Hospital Southwest was originally founded as Southwest Animal Clinic in the late 70’s. In 2002 we moved into our current building. What started as a vast and expansive building, to us, every year seems to feel smaller and smaller as we help more patients.

We strive to be the best possible experience for pet owners. Every opportunity we have to help a pet is an opportunity for us to exhibit our core values of Education, Presence, Integrity, Compassion, and Consistency.

In that light, we have been accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association since 2005. This accreditation is only bestowed upon 10-15% of veterinary hospitals in the country that commit to providing excellent medical care to their patients.

We seek to provide the best door to door service any of our clients have ever experienced at a medical facility, bar none.

We know that affordability can always be a concern, so we offer preventive care plans so that pet owners can spread their preventive care costs throughout the year.

What really makes us different though is our commitment to helping our homeless pet community. We provide 5% of every dollar spent in our facility to help pets in need at our local municipal shelters through Animal Hope. Animal Hope takes on pets that municipal shelters either don’t have the funds or the facilities to help and we take pride in nursing those pets back to health for them to be adopted when our wonderful veterinary staff nurses those homeless pets back to health.

What were you like growing up?
I was a pretty quiet kid. I didn’t take on much attention. I loved playing sports but hated people watching me play them.

I became a bit of a trouble maker as I got a little older, but I moved past that phase pretty quickly.
