Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Niemann.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Brian. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in Nebraska and developed a love for drawing and design early on. I graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney with a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design. During college, I worked as a t-shirt designer which was a lot of fun and allowed me to get a jumpstart on my portfolio.
My first job out of college was with a large ad agency in Omaha. I was exposed to all aspects of agency life and learned a ton. After a few years, I followed my brother to Dallas and took a design job at Streetball Partners International. As a big sports fan, it was a great opportunity to work with the NFL, NBA, NHL, college conferences and similar entities.
Next, I worked for two medium-sized design and advertising agencies, Boyer Group and Griffith Phillips Creative. I was able to do lots of interesting work, meet lifelong friends and learn from brilliant mentors that helped me become a complete designer and a better person.
In 2003 I decided to start my own small graphic design company – Niemann Design. As much as I loved working with larger companies, I wanted to get back to being in control of every step of the project. I enjoy and value the direct interaction I now have with my clients and think that is a key to our success. Just as importantly, the business has allowed me to really concentrate on the craft of design again – the whole reason I chose this career in the first place.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve been fortunate that the road has been pretty smooth. As I said, I’ve had some great bosses and coworkers that were very generous with their time and expertise and they helped me avoid some of the pitfalls others might run into.
Owning a business comes with its own set of ups and downs. There have been some stressful times and many late nights. Luckily, I have wonderful clients that care about design and appreciate our partnership. I push myself every day to make sure I’m delivering the best work possible because of the high value I place on those relationships.
One challenge that my business has really helped me with is parenting. My most important job is being a Dad and my kids are always my number one priority. I’ve structured my business so that I maintain the flexibility to be available for anything they need and I get to spend a lot more time with them than I would if I worked for someone else – it’s definitely the best benefit of having my own business.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
It’s impossible to choose one childhood memory that stands out above all the others. I grew up in a small town in Nebraska and had a wonderful childhood. My family has always been very close. I knew I had great parents as a child but having my own kids really brought home how amazing they are. I have two brothers and we made tons of great memories as kids. They’re my best friends and have been since day one.
Our favorite activity has always been going to Nebraska football games. My Dad has had season tickets for over fifty years and I’ve sat in those seats with him, my brothers, my kids and every combination of family and friend you can think of. Football games and holidays still serve as special times that we can get our families together even though we all live in different states now.
