Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Radican.
Brian, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in Texas and went to the University of Texas at Austin. I moved to Florida soon after graduation and started in the construction industry in Florida in the early 90’s. I worked for a couple of healthcare focused construction companies and learned the ins and out of delivering a project in the highly regulated healthcare construction field. I wanted to get back to Texas and was hired by a large multi-family real-estate development company to start a healthcare development division, but their commitment to the new division was not steadfast, so I left after a short time and one of the clients I was pursuing, decided that they wanted me to develop their hospital in Houston. I was able to find the right investment partner and after two years’ worth of work was able to get the project off the ground. This project was the catalyst that started Valeo Development.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My first attempt to start out on my own was a partnership with a local architect. The partnership landed a large, Dallas area specialty hospital development. The architect got greedy and tried to take the project himself and ended up ruining the partnership and leaving me to start over again.
Please tell us about Valeo Development.
Valeo Development’s focus is on project management, quality management and idea development. Our core business revolves around working with real estate development and facility owner clients to provide real estate development project management. We provide leadership and experience to the project team and represent our client’s best interests to coordinate the project activities and help our clients convert their ideas on paper into real property. Valeo works with our clients to imagine, create, manage and control the process of facility development from the beginning to end. In a typical development project Valeo will represent the client in order to professionally manage some or all of the following tasks; project budgeting and pre-development due diligence, feasibility and constructability of a tract of land, development of the building program and then management of the design team, spearhead the necessary entitlements and public approvals, manage the construction process and deliver a finished facility that meets our clients budget, schedule and operational goals.
Over the last nine years we have helped develop 6 hospitals, 2 drive-in movie theaters, 2 church expansions and 5 assisted living / memory care projects.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I grew up in Connecticut and every year my parents and my, Aunt and Uncle rented a beach house. My cousins and I would spend the week hunting for shells, swimming out to the floating dock and hanging out. I moved to Texas when I was 15 and consider myself a Texan.
