Meet Britna Savarese of Dallas Death Doula

Today we’d like to introduce you to Britna Savarese.

Britna Savarese

Britna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
If you asked me at 10 years old what I dreamed of becoming, then I would’ve unequivocally said, “A mortician!” Growing up, I was deeply moved by time spent in the local funeral home for occasional visitations and funerals. Ted, the mortician, had the respect of the community, and he helped families during one of the most difficult times of their lives. I wanted to help, too and attended mortuary college after high school, but this career path did not lead me to the work I felt called to do.

I admit to feeling lost as my lifelong dream sat unrealized for years while I searched for my true calling. Then I found a video of Alua Arthur. As she described Death Doula’s work, I knew that was my lifelong dream. Death work – specifically being of service to people in this realm – is my life’s work and greatest honor.

Alua Arthur’s energy and passion led me to gain training and certification through Going With Grace, and I continue to learn with every doula interaction.

Currently, I host a monthly Death Café and am available for public speaking engagements. I am also an artist specializing in preserved flowers and resin art, so I bring a unique perspective to art within rites and rituals related to dying.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I was so happy to have chosen Going with Grace for my training. The curriculum made it easy, digestible, and even fun. This truly helped me feel confident in launching my business. The continuing education I receive from many sources, including Going with Grace, has been invaluable as well.

The main obstacle is that people don’t know about death doulas or what we do, so they do not know they need us! Also, launching a new business with no capital can be very difficult. That is why referrals have been so crucial to my growth.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I specialize in offering customized guidance and support to help people as they plan for the end-of-life. I help my clients navigate the complexities of death planning, including:

– Advanced Care Planning: Empowering you to make informed decisions about your end-of-life preferences, ensuring your wishes are respected and honored.

– Emotional Support: Providing a safe space for individuals and their loved ones to express their feelings, fears, and concerns throughout the dying process.

– Home Funerals: Guiding families in reclaiming the ancient tradition of caring for their deceased loved ones at home with respect, dignity, and empowering rituals.

I believe that the dying process is a deeply personal and transformative journey and am committed to fostering an environment that allows individuals to embrace their end of life with peace, serenity, and dignity. My services encompass:

– Holistic Care: Integrating therapies such as music, touch, aromatherapy, and gentle movement to ensure comfort and serenity throughout the dying process.

– Legacy Planning: Assisting individuals in creating a lasting legacy by capturing their stories, values, and wisdom to be cherished by future generations.

– Grief Support: Offering compassionate bereavement support to help families understand and navigate the grieving process.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
I offer many services, not only for people who have received a terminal diagnosis but also for those who want to prepare for the unexpected.

I offer free consultations to learn more about what the client needs and to make sure I am a good fit for them and their needs. If not, I help the person find a doula better suited to their needs.

As a small business, I depend on referrals and word-of-mouth promotion. I am also available for public speaking engagements and educational seminars.
