Today we’d like to introduce you to Britt Evans and Douglas Cason.
Brit and Douglas, please share your story with us.
We met at Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Dallas. Britt is a classically trained dancer (Ballet, Jazz, Modern). Douglas came from a sports background. We both have a deep desire to make a difference with our lives and found the perfect outlet with ballroom dancing through Arthur Murray. It is the unique mix of artistry, athleticism, and soul that attracts us. There is truly no other hobby or activity like it.
We were Top teachers, professional dancers & competitors, and executives in the Plano and Dallas studios.
Wanting to make an impact bigger than ourselves, we started to focus on the development of teachers. This prepared us to branch out on our own. In 2006, we opened Arthur Murray Dance Studio of Fort Worth. It is currently the largest Arthur Murray in the world.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Our calling is to train people. We wanted to grow beyond ourselves. We hire people from all different backgrounds and passions. Together, we work as a team to impact our community.
The road up is never smooth. Our early years were composed of eating bread crumbs, practicing day and night, and training people nonstop.
Our biggest challenge is striving to be the professional standard in our industry. Unlike many businesses, our industry is an intimate one where we put our arms around our clients every day. This was one of the reasons we chose to make our studio an Arthur Murray studio instead of “Britt and Douglas'” studio. We like that we are a part of the oldest, largest, and most respected dance organization in the world. We love that there is something bigger than us and that we have a standard of excellence demanded of us because of that. We also love how it breeds a level of professionalism and accountability in our studio.
We strive to keep the focus on the development and nurturing of students and creating the next wave of Arthur Murray Professionals. For us, even though we are incredibly passionate and disciplined with our dancing, it is people first, dancing second. The passion for dance must be there, but the passion for people must always come first. We run all our business decisions through this lens with the belief that if we continue to do this, the bottom line with always improve.
Please tell us about Arthur Murray Dance Studio of Fort Worth.
Our mission at AMfW is “To add value to people’s lives”. We do this through teaching ballroom dances lessons to both singles and couples. This is just the start.
We get to watch and witness the extraordinary changes and growth of people. We see marriages mended and divorcees learn to trust again. We watch as people gain confidence, lose weight and cherish life. We witness young adults and children gain confidence and social ease. We strive to be the professional examples in our industry. We focus on the physical and emotional development of our students, and we encourage the creativity and spark of our staff in a safe environment.
We have 15 staff. Our teachers were all homegrown (trained in Fort Worth) and teach full time. Many of them have become leaders in our industry. Some of our staff met in the studio, married and are now having kids. It truly is a familial community.
Many people say the same thing when they first come into our studio. They are amazed at the feeling, energy, and culture of our school. There is something different about AMFW and you have to see it to understand it.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing. Everything happens for a reason and we must learn from every turn in the road.
