Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittaney Glazer.
Brittaney, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Very few of us actually end up being what we “want to be when we grow up.” I knew before high school that I wanted to be a dentist. Throughout college, I worked in a dental office and knew then I wanted to own my own practice one day; the details on how exactly to get there were a little (ok, a lot) fuzzy, but I knew I’d figure that part out.
After dental school graduation, I worked as an associate for a few years but still knew practice ownership was the path for me. People tried to sway me along the way with the obligatory “it’s a lot of hard work” and the “why own when you can just work for someone,” but I knew that being a business owner was what I wanted to do.
Glazer Family Dentistry has been many years in the making. We first had to find the community we wanted to serve. I knew from the moment I saw the pile of dirt (I did mention we are a start-up office, right?), Murphy TX was the right fit for us. Then, I started designing the office. I have been involved in the design and construction of Glazer Family Dentistry every step of the way. From choosing the wall colors, to where each light-switch went, this office truly is my dream come true.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a small obstacle course to establish our office, but what small business start-up doesn’t go through a few of bumps along the way? The space was just some dirt when I knew I wanted it to be Glazer Family Dentistry, so with any construction we had some delays but it all worked out. Also, being a solo-practitioner in a profession that is leaning towards corporate dentistry has also had it challenges; but knowing my end goal helped make the bumps along the way a little smoother. The vision and philosophy of the office was always crystal clear to me, and each decision made reflected that philosophy. This helped keep everyone focused and unified, and ultimately created an office and a team with a strong identity we are proud of.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Glazer Family Dentistry story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a general family dental office. Glazer Family Dentistry focuses on comprehensive care for the whole family. We offer a range of dental services for the whole family, from a child’s 1st dental visit, to routine preventive cleanings to emergencies. Our philosophy is: One doctor. One office. Your whole family. And we mean it!
We are most proud of the fact that you will see the same doctor for each visit. In the changing world of corporate dentistry, we are proud that we are a truly locally-owned dental office. This office is my only location, and patients will see me at each visit. We are trying to bring back that the true “family dentist office” where you grow up seeing the same dentist your entire childhood and then bring your kids back to that same dentist. I feel that often that individualized care has been lost, and we are focusing on bringing that back to dentistry. We like to think we have old-fashioned standards within a modern office!
We also have incorporated technology into our office to make every patient’s visit as comfortable as possible. We know we are not people’s favorite place to be (we don’t take it personally), so we try to make the experience as enjoyable as possible. There are televisions in each operatory, and most patients like to watch TV during their appointments. We also have noise-cancelling headphones, and iPads with pre-loaded playlists on them if music is more relaxing to anyone. I am also able to take intra-oral photos of each tooth, and can show patients exactly what I am looking at, which often helps me show areas of concern or praise.
We also don’t believe in lectures here, so you won’t get scolded if you haven’t been to the dentist in a while, we’re just glad you’re here now. At the end of the day, we know it is a dental office, and yes, sometimes you’d rather be anywhere else. But, you’ll quickly recognize at that Glazer Family Dentistry, we strive to make each visit is personalized, clear and encouraging. Since we’ve opened, our community has been incredibly welcoming. Patients are understanding our philosophy and what set us apart. They are now sending their friends and loved ones to see us, which is the greatest compliment you can give us!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck is a funny thing. You never really can measure the “luck” that is involved in the success or failure of a business. I recognize I was lucky enough to know I wanted to be a dentist at such as young age, it definitely made my career path a lot straighter and more focused. But, I also know, that the success of Glazer Family Dentistry isn’t about luck. It’s about hard work, the team we’ve built, the philosophy of our practice, and the patients we treat. But don’t get me wrong, there is no way I’m opening an umbrella inside the office, just in case any of that bad luck rubs off …
