Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Jones.
Brittany Jones & Identity
“If anybody asks me who I am, just tell them I’m a child of God.” These words could be heard sung by 3-year-old Brittany Johnson as she stood in a choir at her grandfather’s church. Little did she know, that this was just the beginning.
Brittany sang through grade school and began directing gospel choirs in high school. Soon after, she became the Minister of Music at the Marvellous Light Community Church, Pastor Eugene Johnson, where she leads worship and directed the choir.
After college, God began to divinely order her steps to meet and connect with some of the cities most anointed local gospel artists. In addition, churches all over Dallas began to request that she minister through song in their services. She has been afforded the opportunity to grace the stage with artists such as Vickie Winans, Crystal Aikin, Gaye Arbuckle Sneed, Candy West, Kathy Taylor, Beverly Crawford, Kirk Franklin, Geoffrey Golden, Jonathon McReynolds, Earnest Pugh, Chrystal Rucker, Fred Hammond and the Dallas Chapter of GMWA. She was even featured on BET’s Bobby Jones Gospel as a lead soloist with Dr. Patrick Bradley and the Westside Baptist Church Choir in 2014.
In the summer of 2011, God began to give Brittany Johnson psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to help her commemorate the lessons He had taught her and the revelations He wanted her to teach to others. In January of 2012, God gave her the visions to form a group of young believers who were adamant about expressing praises to God through song.
Brittany and Identity released their debut album “Broken For A Blessing” in August 2013. The group has since then been awarded 2014 Ensemble Of The Year at The Texas Gospel Music Awards, and Brittany was awarded Songwriter Of The Year at The Rhythm Of Gospel Awards in 2014 and Female Vocalist Of The Year at the Homegrown Gospel Awards in 2015.
Brittany and Identity have been traveling across the United States sharing “Broken For A Blessing” message. In fact, Brittany presented “In Everything Give Thanks” from the debut project at GMWA 2015 in New Orleans, Louisiana and “Sweet Exchange” at GMWA 2018 in Atlanta, GA.
Brittany is a singer, songwriter, music educator, and vocal coach. July of 2019 Brittany launched “Brittany J Vocal Studios”. She now has 10 registered voice students ranging from age nine and up across the US. She enjoys depositing her knowledge into the hearts and minds of others.
Has it been a smooth road?
Though singing is a passion, there have definitely been struggles. In my teens and early twenties, I often battled low self-esteem regarding my “disability of brachial palsy”. I place it in quotes now because I realize God makes no mistakes, and that He can use the “foolish things to shame the wise”. Thus, what some might consider a hindrance, I now see as an opportunity to boast in my weaknesses and proclaim His goodness. In the classroom, it is also a great teaching point to my students concerning bullying and acceptance of others.
I have also struggled with comparing myself to others. However, on one occasion, God made it clear to me that He has his own plans. I had to minister a song at the GMWA on a Tuesday night. On Monday night, I went to a musical and the actual artist was there singing the exact song. I was shocked. I kept asking myself what I should do the next day? When my choir director gave me the mic the next night, I closed my eyes, prayed, and sang it the way I prepared. Afterwards, some of the singers of the actual group came and encouraged me. I felt such relief knowing I can be myself.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
I am a singer, songwriter, and vocal coach. I believe what sets me apart is my transparency. I’m honest with my students-the good, bad, and ugly. We laugh. We cry. We grow together. I truly consider them my family. Being a teacher makes me a goal-oriented vocal coach. In turn, I am able to evaluate my students’ strengths and weaknesses and modify them in a strategic way. I also enjoy celebrating them and supporting them with their endeavors.
