Meet Brittany Martel of BeautyByBrittany in East Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Martel.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Brittany. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
At 18, I knew my road to happiness was the beauty industry. I’ve always loved making people feel confident and giving them a “let me take a selfie” feeling. It makes my day and keeps me going.

I started attending Ogle Beauty 13 years ago and instantly fell in love. I remember having all my cousins and family come up to the school to let me practice on them – they were all so supportive! After that, I worked at a few different salons including a children’s salon for five whole years – that was definitely an adventure. The owner of the kid’s salon had a back room where all the moms would get their hair cut by her and guess who colored, ME! That’s where it truly began. I found that my passion was definitely COLOR. I absolutely love everything about it. Color corrections are my favorite because they’re such a challenge… it takes a lot of time and patience but it’s something that I love and will continue to do. Seeing the transformation I’m able to make and seeing how my clients react to their transformation is such an amazing feeling.

There’s so much to learn, it really is a science. For instance, canceling out unwanted tones can be tricky… knowing blue cancels out orange and purple cancels out yellow are a good tip to know while lifting and bleaching hair. The color wheel is my best friend. I love learning new techniques and tricks to making good hair.

I now do hair out of my suite at Salons by JC called BeautyByBrittany, it took me A LOT of sleepless nights to really be sure I could do it. After a ton of thought and prayers, I went for it. I took a leap of faith and it’s been such a blessing ever since! I’m booked out months in advance, I have clients all day long, I even have an assistant to help out (Destiny Rueda) I’m truly grateful for her she’s my right hand. I’m so grateful for everything that’s happened so far in my career, I do it for my family who I want to make proud. I want my girls to know all the hard-working days are for their future!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Has it been a smooth road?? Hmmm…
I don’t think anything in life is ever smooth I think obstacles are what keeps us learning and trying new things. Stepping outside the box is sometimes terrifying, but in the end, it can end up leading you to the most successful things in life.

I’ve always struggled with Anxiety and Depression. I get down on myself, I have trouble sleeping, I was so scared to open my salon, I would think to myself “what if I don’t have enough clientele to make a living, to pay my bills, to take care of my family.” The thoughts kept going on and on, I finally prayed so much about it and put it in Gods hands. I went for it and haven’t looked back!!

It’s such an amazing feeling when I get positive feedback from clients and they come and see me multiple times a year! I feel like my clients are more like family and I truly adore them.

As far as my anxiety, I always say to myself…”Don’t overthink.” Just go for it! Have faith and think positive thoughts. There’s always gonna be a bump in the road. Nothings ever perfect – who you are as a person, how strong you make yourself, and how willing you are to challenge yourself, are what it takes to overcome your toughest days. Life is too short to hold back.

BeautyByBrittany – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is specializing in hair color, color correction, special occasions (updos, blowouts) and extensions. I love color and extension combos because working to get the colors blended just right to look like there real hair is a rewarding challenge. That’s my favorite!

But that’s not all I do. I also do men’s, children’s, and women’s haircuts.

Waxing, Keratin treatments, and makeup are also on my list!

I make my clients feel as comfy as possible and communication is definitely key! What sets us aside is a laid back vibe and the best scalp massages around. Like seriously, my assistant is the best – you’ll wanna make weekly appointments just for a hair wash!

I also offer great pricing. I’m a mother of two – I get it my kids always come first so paying an arm and a leg at the salon just isn’t realistic. I charge a fair price so that my clients continue to come back throughout the year. And it’s worked so far! I can’t express it enough how much I love what I do. I will continue to grow my craft and continue to do everything I can to make my work show off how much I love what I do.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Getting to have a feature in Voyage is a pretty proud moment for sure!

Having the opportunity to just share my story is an amazing feeling and I really appreciate the professionalism and kindness I’ve gotten already.

I also feel lucky to have such a supportive family. We get to take family trips every year, we’re all in good health and we love each other unconditionally what more could I ever ask for!? That by far makes me extremely proud.
