Meet Brittany Matwijecky of Smallcakes Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Matwijecky.

Brittany, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up cooking and baking in Cleveland, Ohio. My aunt made everything from homemade pierogis to coconut lamb cakes for Easter. I loved being in the kitchen. In 2020, after spending more than a decade in corporate America, I was laid off and searching for a new opportunity. My husband – my entrepreneur – told me about a cupcakery for sale in Albuquerque. Smallcakes ABQ seemed too good to be true. After months of back and forth, we decided not to buy the business. I believed God wanted my family in Dallas. By the end of 2021, Smallcakes Dallas was for sale, and my husband and I were the proud new owners!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not. We had a lot of challenges. Covid mandates, staffing issues, construction in our center, disgruntled customers, more construction in our center, and a break-in made for an exciting first year. “In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart!”

We’ve been impressed with Smallcakes Dallas, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Smallcakes Dallas is a woman-owned business that specializes in freshly baked gourmet cupcakes, boozy cupcakes, custom cakes, cookies, brownies, ice cream, cake pops, and more. Our location is one of 200 worldwide. Our cupcakes appeared on the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars,” MTV Movie & TV Awards, and The View. USA Today voted Smallcakes the Best Place to Get a Cupcake! What sets us apart from others is that we bake everything fresh daily – IN HOUSE. Our kitchen is running every morning, six days a week. I am most proud of my team, the welcoming atmosphere we’ve created, and the quality of product we offer. I love partnering with customers to plan birthdays, weddings, and other events. It is a true joy celebrating life’s sweetest moments with people.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
I was blessed to have had the opportunity to run my own book of business in corporate America. Without that experience, I would not have been prepared to handle the obstacles I faced in the small business world. Take a risk. Buy a business. But make sure you have applicable experience. When you do, take the time to hire, nurture, and encourage key employees. Do your best to make people feel valued and appreciated.
