Meet Burk Rosenthal of Rosenthal Retirement Planning

Today we’d like to introduce you to Burk Rosenthal.

Burk, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been an independent financial advisor, advising clients on strategies to help preserve and manage wealth for over 25 years. After two years with a large financial services firm, I established my own firm, Rosenthal Retirement Planning, in 1993.

Along with being the President of Rosenthal Retirement Planning, I’ve acquired my CFP®, ChFC®, CRC®, and CFS designations. We now have offices in Fort Worth, Dallas and Las Colinas. We specialize in working with retirees and pre-retirees; typically, those who are already retired, or within 5 years of retirement.

The biggest goal people have is retirement. When we ask clients to prioritize their financial goals, they almost always put retirement planning first. We feel specializing in retirement planning is important because the retirement distribution phase, as we call it, is entirely different than the accumulation phase.

The firm’s advisors are well-versed in the retirement transition process and the complex rules regarding retirement distributions. Because Rosenthal is an independent financial advisory firm, we don’t work for a brokerage firm, an investment company, or an insurance company, but rather we work for our clients.

Since 1992, I’ve authored numerous financial articles and often had the opportunity to become a resource to the media. I have appeared on CNBC, CBS News, ABC News, and served as a retirement specialist on TXA-21 Evening News. I’ve also hosted a radio show and podcast “Your Money! with Rosenthal Retirement Planning.” I was also named one of the top 100 independent financial advisors in the nation by Registered Rep Magazine in 2010*. In 2013, 2014, and 2016 I was awarded by D Magazine as one of the Best Financial Planners in Dallas. Also, Rosenthal Retirement Planning was just recently nominated as one of the Best And Brightest Companies To Work For® (winners announced in November of 2017).

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We highly value our clients and therefore wish for both parties to mutually benefit from our advisor/client relationships. Therefore, over time we’ve realized that not everyone would be is a good fit for our firm.

Limiting our clientele has several advantages:

• Allows us to pay special attention to the needs of clients whose investment philosophies fit with our strategies
• Provides clear expectations of both parties in our advising relationship
• Brings more experience to the table by specializing in certain types of clients

Types of people we are most often able to help include:

Current or past employees of Verizon, AT&T, or Lockheed Martin
Individuals who are changing jobs or retiring
Family or close friends of current clients
Anyone recently widowed or divorced
Individuals seeking a second opinion or who are unhappy with their current advisor
Individuals receiving an inheritance or settlement

Types of people we may refer to another firm include:

Do-It-Yourself investors
Clients seeking a “market timing” strategy
Investors seeking a portfolio heavily-weighted in one type of stock or asset class (e.g., precious metals)
Those with less than $500,000 of investable assets (including employer plans)

Our criteria for deciding to move forward with a new client is based on their having an asset level best serviced by our areas of experience and their having a philosophy congruent with ours. Although we do have a $500,000 household minimum investment for new clients, special exceptions may apply for close friends or family members of current clients. We offer our initial consultation free of charge to guide and advise all referrals regarding their financial futures.

If for any reason we determine our firm is not the right fit for someone, please be assured that we will point them in the right direction to ensure their needs are met.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
At Rosenthal, our specialty is assisting you in the income distribution phase of your life. We can help you plan for a smooth transition from your working years into the next relaxing chapter of retirement. By educating you on the retirement income strategies available, we can help you decide when you can afford to retire in order to maintain the comfortable lifestyle in which you have become accustomed.

Families laugh together, mourn together, and want the very best for each other. We have personalized our business to make you a part of our family. When you call our office, you speak with a live person immediately – not after selecting multiple menu options, pressing buttons, and waiting on hold – because we haven’t lost touch with the people who matter most: our family, our friends, our clients, you. At Rosenthal Retirement Planning, you won’t jump through hoops to get an answer to your questions or to receive the quality service you deserve. Each week, our work family meets to discuss a single topic: how to keep improving our service. We are a family-owned business. We know family, and we want to know you.

We can help provide guidance in determining the best time to retire. Then, we will assist you with the retirement transition process, which will include a discussion regarding suitable investment options and preparing a retirement income strategy.

Once you have retired, we will meet with you regularly to review your financial situation and help ensure that you are accomplishing your retirement goals. As comprehensive retirement counselors, we will discuss your insurance needs, taxes, estate plans, and Social Security to help you get the most out of your financial plans.

A strong portfolio is the backbone of a sound retirement. When building your portfolio, we take your age, goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, and overall investment objectives into consideration. Our goal is to help prevent you from outliving your money, while maintaining your desired standard of living throughout retirement. Due to the impact of inflation, this can sometimes be difficult. Rest assured, we will work diligently to keep your portfolio balanced appropriately for income and growth.

In addition to our comprehensive planning approach, we build investment portfolios that are based upon more than 50 years of academic research firmly rooted in the belief that markets are largely efficient, and that investment returns are determined primarily by asset allocation, not market timing or specific stock selection. We believe that the most trustworthy and objective securities and market research found today exists in academia. Rigorous academic and Nobel Prize-winning theory is the foundation for this approach.

You are entitled to complimentary consultations with our financial advisors in order to help determine if you are on track to reach your retirement goals. There is much you can do during your working years to plan for a successful retirement. We are happy to review your 401(k) to ensure that your allocations are well-balanced and aligned with your retirement goals. We can also provide retirement income projections to help ensure you are on track for a sound retirement. If you are eligible for a pension, we will explain pension election options.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Along with my wife Alisha Rosenthal, CFP®, CRC®, Financial Advisor, we have a team of Financial Advisors who serve under me, as well as a great support staff who handle Client Relations and the operational side within the firm, making up our Rosenthal work family. They just nominated us for one of the Best And Brightest Companies To Work For® In addition, we greatly appreciate the referrals that we’ve received by current and future clients over the years. Thanks to them as well as other fellow Advisors within the field that have supported me along the way, even nominating me through D Magazine as one of the Best Financial Planners in Dallas year after year. Having this support team has helped to build the firm that we are today and the future of Rosenthal.
