Meet Caleb Lopez of Pet Supplies Plus in Throughout all DFW

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb Lopez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Caleb. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We got our start in Dallas in the early 2000’s and opened 2 additional stores over the course of the next several years. In 2011, we began to invest heavily in the growth of DFW and began opening several stores per year. We now have 17 stores throughout DFW with the 18th opening in the Fall of 2018.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s definitely not been a “smooth road”, as things rarely are in business, especially retail. DFW is booming, so the competition to find the right real estate is always a challenge. Since our stores are smaller in size than some of our competitors (we’re not a “big box” retail chain), it can take a while to gain name recognition and for people to realize we’re even in their neighborhood.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Pet Supplies Plus story. Tell us more about the business.
Pet Supplies Plus started in the mid-1980’s in Detroit, MI. The founders quickly realized that people’s emotional bond with their pets creates great potential in Pet Specialty Retail. Our retail experience became much more about helping people provide the best life possible for their pets, not just simply selling a product. Our smaller retail size also helped us focus on serving neighborhoods and creating connections and community involvement around each store. That’s why our mission is to be America’s favorite neighborhood pet store and also why we refer to our customers as our “neighbors” – because they truly are.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Its all about partnerships with local rescue groups and shelters, like Operation Kindness, who share the same passion to provide the best, happiest, healthiest life possible for pets. We also have a daily commitment to treat everyone who walks through our doors like a neighbor, the same as if you were inviting them into your home.
