Meet Dr. Cameron “Cam” Wendling of Texas Wisdom Teeth and Dental Implants in North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Cameron “Cam” Wendling.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
At a young age, I was naturally drawn to dentistry. I was about five or six years old when I had a project at school where I was supposed to draw what I wanted to be when I grew up. I drew a tooth. My childhood dentist set an excellent example of how dentistry could be used to help those in need. I knew I wanted to join this field and make a difference. Years later, I shadowed my hometown oral/maxillofacial surgeon and quickly fell in love with the profession. My passion continued through college and dental school, and I still feel it every day when I step into my office.

After receiving my Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology from West Virginia University, I applied and was accepted into West Virginia University’s dental school. There was never any question in my heart that OMFS was my future, so after completing my doctorate, I accepted a yearlong internship at Parkland Memorial Hospital & University of Texas Southwestern Hospital. Following my internship in Dallas, I was accepted into a four-year residency program at Christiana Care in Wilmington, DE outside of Philadelphia.

While completing my internship in Dallas, I met my wife, Laura. Laura was born and raised in the DFW Metroplex, and we set big goals to make it back to Dallas after graduation. We were married in January 2017 and welcomed our daughter, Elle in November 2018. Once Elle joined our family it was clear to us that Dallas was our home, and I set out to make these goals reality. I am proud of the work that went into becoming a surgeon and proud we were able to find the right practice to make our own. I am truly passionate about the work that I get to do every day, and I know it is making a difference in the lives of my patients. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends and cheering on the WVU football and basketball teams. I always try to find time to play a round of golf whenever it is nice out!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were many challenges going through the last 13 years of education and training. My internship at Parkland and first two years at Christiana Care were definitely the most challenging but also most rewarding. There is a physical and mental toll that can be overbearing at times between balancing clinical duties, patients, twenty-four-hour call days, seventy-two-hour call weekends and family life at home. Luckily, I was able to overcome adversity thanks to my strong support system of family, co-residents, and my wife, Laura.

Texas Wisdom Teeth and Dental Implants – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our business is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery office. This is a specialty of the field of dentistry, but also much more in-depth. As oral and maxillofacial surgeons, we have 4-6 years of additional training after dental school in fields such as medicine, anesthesia, surgery, pediatric surgery and anesthesia, trauma, pathology, and facial reconstruction. In our office, we are focused on extraction of wisdom teeth, other dental extractions, dental implants, benign pathology, and minor cosmetic procedures as well as corrective jaw surgery in the future. What sets us apart is the ability to provide in-office general anesthesia, not just oral sedation you may receive in other specialists and general practitioners’ offices. I am most proud of the staff that we have assembled in the office. Everyone that will be involved in your care is very friendly and truly wants you to have the best experience. We are truly a team and we enjoy working together every day.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment would have to be at graduation after completing my oral and maxillofacial surgery residency. Thirteen years of education and training is a long time and sometimes it seemed the end would never come. I think I enjoyed the looks of happiness and achievement on my wife, Laura and my parents’ faces more than anything. They were in the trenches with me as I completed this training, and it was a team win as I completed my dream.
