Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron McCloud.
Cameron, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Almost three years ago, I was diagnosed with Bi-Polar Paranoid Schizophrenic and decided to start a band centered around how I dealt with it. Creating music with the family, I’d built turned out to be more therapeutic for me than the medication, so it just seemed like the natural thing to do. The ultimate goal is to get to the point where I don’t have to take any medication at all and I’m getting pretty close to making that happen.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve literally worked to the point where the only problems I have in life are the ones in my head. I’ve never been so at peace in my entire life, I definitely need to be working harder, and there’s a lot more I should be doing to expand this thing I’ve created, so that peace sometimes has a habit of making me too complacent but I try my best to make sure and check myself when I notice I’m getting lazy.
So, yeah, I guess peace is the greatest challenge to my productivity at the moment, and that’s a pretty good problem to have.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Cure For Paranoia – what should we know?
Cure For Paranoia is a band comprised of myself, Stanley Francisko (singer), Tomahawk Jonez (producer/songwriter), and Jay Analog (producer). I’m a hip-hop artist previously known as “ThatKidCam” in the Dallas scene but decided to go under the moniker Cameron McCloud whenever the band started. Cure For Paranoia just felt like the next step in the evolution of me so, I took on my father’s last name “McCloud”, who wasn’t in my life growing up, but did send me his mixtapes occasionally, so I feel like if I got the rap gene from anyone it was him.
There are too many blessings to even count one as what I’m most proud of about our band, I’d say inspiring people to be and better themselves is pretty cool. Our message transcends genre, so we’ve opened for every type of artist under the sun which is amazing to me.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I’m becoming a master at being myself.
My willingness to speak on things that others’ feel the need to hide or be ashamed of is so foreign to people that it’s become a bit of a spectacle to watch, there are some that aren’t even on the ride for the music and just want to see how this whole ‘being crazy’ thing works out for me.
