Today we’d like to introduce you to Canaan Ivy.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in Fort Worth, TX. I first started songwriting at the age of 7 after the death of my grandad. We had a musical bond, and I like to think he passed me the gift of writing. I wrote for therapy, solace, and joy. I went to school at TCU for neuroscience. I thought I would be a doctor, but after one-year post-undergrad, I realized I had other aspirations. I began work on my first EP in Aug of 2017 and came out with my first single, Elusive Love, shortly thereafter. I self-released my first EP in Jan of 2018 and my first album in Jan of 2019 title “The Coast is Gone.” The album walks you through the highs and lows of being a young adult and finding yourself amongst the pressures of society and your community. I hope to continue writing and playing for many years to come!
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a whirlwind. I went from being on a medical track to finding my footing in the entertainment industry. They are completely different animals, and I had no clue what I was doing at first. I had to find my sound. My first EP was very indie pop, but that was not me. I found my “bag” with my most recent album, The Coast is Gone. Smooth RnB mixed with vintage rock and roll. I have struggled finding venues that cater to those types of music in DFW, but I am always on the lookout and have played some great shows at Shipping and Receiving, Tomcats West, Curtain Club, Main at Southside, Prophet Bar, and many more!
So, as you know, we’re impressed with your work – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
People tell me my stage presence, my showmanship, and my lyrics are a huge strong suit. They enjoy smooth vocals and an electric vibe. My goal at the end of the show is for people to feel 10 ft off the ground the way I do. We can all use an escape from our 9-5 lives and journey into something more. I am a strong believer in God, and I know he is directing my music. It shines through and definitely sets me apart from the rest.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and the least?
I love the friendliness of DFW. We take southern hospitality seriously, and it shows. My favorite thing about our city is our people. We know how to take care of one another. My least favorite thing may be the lack of musical diversity currently, and we need more big musical events. I think these things are changing with Fortress fest and other festivals getting more air time.
