Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Jerrier.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jay. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Dogs have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Cane Rosso, the name of our restaurant group, means “red dog” in Italian and is named after our first dog, Zoli (also the name of one of our new restaurants).
The plight of abandoned, abused, neglected and unwanted dogs is something that has always touched me. Lily Tomlin once said, “I said, ‘Someone should do something about that’…then I realized that I was someone.” I’m fortunate enough to be in the position to do something about it … so I am.
I founded the volunteer-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization Cane Rosso Rescue in March of 2014 and in 2016 I opened the Cane Rosso Rescue Center, which is a rescue, rehabilitation and placement facility for sporting dogs across from the Carrollton location of the restaurant.
Personally, I have seven of my own right now (three Vizslas, three English Pointers, and one German Shorthair) and I’ve always got a foster dog or two in the mix at any given time.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s always a challenge to have enough money and resources to support the volume of dogs that we’re able to rescue. We are always looking for extra volunteers to help, as well as financial donations so that our dogs have everything they need until they find their forever homes.
Please tell us about Cane Rosso Rescue.
We drive fundraising support for other DFW area dog rescue groups through our collaborative “Pups on the Patio” events, held in the spring and fall.
Area rescue groups are given the opportunity to bring adoptable dogs to Cane Rosso’s dog-friendly patios for a night of fundraising, pet adoptions, and pizza. We accept patron donations and then get discounts and deals on food and drinks in exchange. And we match all donations!
In addition, every bill at Cane Rosso gives our customers the opportunity to “round up for rescue.” Every penny counts! With a number of guests that visit us across 10 restaurants, it really adds up!
We are most proud of the hundreds of dogs we have saved to date, and we hope to save hundreds more as time goes on. What we do differently is we concentrate on hunting breeds and mixed hunting breeds such as Pointers, Viszlas, Retrievers, English pointers, Labradors and Border Collies.
Who else deserves credit – have you had mentors, supporters, cheerleaders, advocates, clients or teammates that have played a big role in your success or the success of the business? If so – who are they and what role did they plan / how did they help.
Our volunteers who donate countless hours to the rescue center and all of our customers who turn up to support our Rescue events are our biggest teammates and advocates, as are our foster families. It takes a village to save a dog!
Also, every customer who comes to our “Pups on the Patio” nights is an invaluable part of the system as they help raise the money we need to keep the rescue center going.
