Meet Cara Waters

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cara Waters.

Hi Cara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I realized I wanted to be a therapist in 2008 and began the process of becoming a therapist. It has not been easy, but it has been rewarding in every way. I feel as if I was created to do this kind of work. I am thankful for my own life experiences because they have helped me become more empathic and compassionate to all. Initially, I began working with those affected by substance use disorders and over time have worked with many populations, including LGBTQIA+. For me, it is seeing beyond the labels that society gives us and looking into a person’s heart. I believe there is hope for everyone.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I struggled with my own personal issues of childhood trauma, abuse, sexuality, and addiction. Once I finally made up my mind that I was worth it, I began acting like it. It takes action. The steps I take can be tiny, but I better be moving forward. I believe we are not meant to live our lives just surviving but thriving. I have to act my way into right thinking, instead of, thinking my way into right action. Take the next right action, whatever that looks like. I am grateful for my experiences because I would not be the person, I am today without the struggles I have endured. I think healing is a lifelong journey and that we never stop growing spiritually, and what a gift that is!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a therapist, and I work for a private practice in Far North Dallas, D2Counseling. I specialize in LGBTQIA+ issues, substance use disorders, codependency, trauma, and women’s issues. I am most proud of the clients who come to therapy and continue to show up every week for their sessions. Therapy is not an easy commitment to make, and it takes courage. I am honored to be a part of their healing journey. Life experience, my own pain and healing journey, compassion, and empathy set me apart from others. I am authentic and real with all my clients.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories was going fishing with my siblings and our dogs.
