Meet Carey Stinson of Carey Stinson Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carey Stinson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I went back to school about seven years ago to learn photography. Was lucky to get an amazing teacher in Vernetta Thomas who became my mentor. She showed me how to look at the world in a different way. I tried to tell a story through my images. Vernetta really gave me the tools to show me how to do that.

I am a proud Texan that really loves this state. My parents took me all over the state when I was a child and had so many amazing adventures in Texas. For the last six years, I have been shooting a Texas series. Wanting to show through my fine art images, the beauty and the wonder of Texas.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, making a living as a photographer has been a challenge. You shoot the photography, do editing, marketing, paperwork, finding the jobs, it can be overwhelming at times. The world moves a lot quicker these days and clients want the images very quickly. With fine art photography, it is not as popular as other types of art. So, it can be a lot harder to get in galleries to show and sell your work. As well as your audience is a lot smaller than other types of art.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I shoot all times of photography from portraits to live music to fine art photography. Concert photography and Fine Art Photography are my favorite types of photography to shoot. You really have to think on your feet to shoot music photography and I love the fast pace of it. With Fine Art Photography my goal is to tell stories through my images.

Which means I am shooting photography a lot and some days not getting images that tell a story but I always love shooting photography. With my clients, it is very important that my clients are happy, so I listen to my clients to see what they are looking for and incorporate that when I am planning a shoot. And making edits and changes when needed to make sure my clients are happy.

What were you like growing up?
I was a shy kid but always loved the arts. In college, I studied music in Waco. Through my life, I have tried many different types of the arts from music to dance to acting. All of those things took me away from being shy. It was about seven years ago when I found photography and absolutely fell in love with it.
