Meet Carl Dorvil of GEX Management

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carl Dorvil.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Carl. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 2004, I started a multi-million dollar supplemental educational services company out of my dorm room at SMU at the age of 20, Group Excellence. Group Excellence did over $40 million in sales, created over 2,000 jobs and tutored over 30,000 students across the state of Texas.

It became one of the fastest growing educational companies in the country and was featured on Inc 500 and Dallas 100 list of fastest growing companies. I sold the company in 2011 to a private equity group and, in that same year, started a family office (Dorvil Enterprises) to house and manage my other investments, provide staffing and support to other businesses, and offer financial advice and consulting.

In 2016, I took one of my portfolio companies, GEX Management, public and became the youngest African American CEO ever to take a company public.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. As with anything that is worth doing well, there have been challenges along the way. For me, I had to forge a new path and there weren’t a lot of role models to look to for advice or direction. Because of this, I focused on surrounding myself with great people and continued to work as hard as I could. The analogy I kept telling myself was that I’m trying to break through the wall and, as opposed to focusing on the break through, I told myself to focus on the process of hitting the wall and to wake up every day with my sledge hammer. Switching my focus to defining success in terms of the process instead of the results allowed me to not be frustrated when I couldn’t see immediate results.

Please tell us about GEX Management.
GEX Management is a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) that focuses on payroll, human resources, tax compliance, and staffing. Making the decision to go public early on is something that we, as a company, are incredibly proud of. What sets us apart is our focus on freeing up businesses to do what they love as well as offering comprehensive back office solutions, instead of simply providing a payroll or HR platform.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My time spent in Montreal with my family. My parents were born in Haiti and my mom’s family moved to Canada when she was young. My sister and I spent most of our summers there.
