Today we’d like to introduce you to Carla Carter
Hi Carla, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story is that I’m a 20 year breast cancer survivor that was diagnosed twice. I was diagnosed the first time in 2004 and then a second time with a totally different type of breast cancer on my 10th year anniversary. I had a lumpectomy and 30 radiation treatments the first time. The second time I had a bilateral (double) mastectomy with immediate reconstruction with Diep flap. I also had surgery remove 7 lymph nodes from my right arm. Both times I was diagnosed it was found in an early stage. Thank you Lord!! Early detection is key. Women make sure to get your mammograms and do monthly self checks. Men can get breast cancer too.
I decided to start a podcast to interview people who have overcome some adverse situations in life and can encourage others to press on no matter what they are up against. Don’t give up!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, not a smooth path at all. I have dealt with all kinds of challenges along the way. I’ve dealt with rejection, low self esteem, depression, getting through college after my parents divorce, relocating to a new state, being a healthy collegiate athlete that later was diagnosed with cancer twice,
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My profession is that I’ve been a service representative at AT&T for almost 29 years. I’m an ordained minister at my local church where I oversee the hospital and nursing home ministry as well being a ministry team leader.
I’m a new podcaster with a podcast called Carla Carter Speaks! I help people with health and wellness and I am a motivational speaker.
I’m known as one who encourages, motivates, inspires, and empowers people to be who God has created them to be. What sets me apart from others is my love and passion for people, faithfulness, commitment and dedication to anything I set my heart to do.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was raised in Sacramento, California. Growing up I was very quiet and shy but an all around athlete. I played volleyball, basketball and ran track & field at Foothill Junior High and Foothill High school. I set records in junior high, high school and college in track & field. In volleyball I was short, a 5’2” middle blocker and an outside hitter that was able to block shots due to my high vertical leap. In basketball I was the point guard, great on fast breaks and lay ups and rebounder. In track & field I was a sprinter, I competed in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m and 4x400m relays where I was the anchor. I ran track & field in college at the University of California at Davis.
I have been blessed with many awards medals and trophies. I loved to travel and just spend time with my family and friends.
