Meet Carlie Kuban of Serve Denton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlie Kuban.

Carlie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Serve Denton was formed in 2012 with the mission to support other nonprofits that open doors for people to become self-sufficient. We do this primarily by providing affordable shared office space for nonprofits so they can put more of their donation dollars toward their mission instead of overhead costs. When nonprofits office in the same location, services are more accessible to those in need.

I started with Serve Denton in 2013 as a Resource Development Intern. I was new to the Denton area and was only planning to stay for a short time. Plans changed, and I quickly fell in love with the community of Denton and this organization, Serve Denton. My position grew over time, and I was eventually offered the position of Office Manager.

From there I was offered the position of Operations Director, and more recently Executive Director. It has been a lot of change and growth in a short time, but I couldn’t be more thankful. This is an organization whose mission I could quickly get behind. I’ve been able to see so many lives touched through the services offered at our nonprofit centers. There’s nothing better than that!

Has it been a smooth road?
Every good thing comes with difficulties along the way. Although Serve Denton was officially formed in 2012, the idea began back in the 1970’s. There had been a couple of attempts to make the dream of a one stop shop for health and human service agencies come to fruition. It’s taken almost 50 years to really see this dream become a reality here in Denton, TX.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Serve Denton – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
One of Serve Denton’s great accomplishments has been opening up “The Wheeler House.” This facility hosts a low-income clinic operated by Health Services of North Texas and transitional housing for homeless moms and their children operated by Giving Hope, Inc. Since the opening of The Wheeler House in 2015, many people have been able to receive quality healthcare and over 70 moms and their children have been given a place to stay while they get back on their feet.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Denton is very community minded. The people here truly care about those in need and are always looking for ways to serve and give back. For example, when we post a need for a family online, we often have people calling within minutes who are willing to help.

It is also a very fun place full of people who are looking for adventure and new experiences. There is truly never a dull moment here!
