Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmen Valencia.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in Mexico and moved to America in my early 20s. Before I left Mexico, I knew I had a passion for hair. When I was little, I used to get horrible hair cuts. With my sisters support, I gained an interest in specializing in color. However, not just any color… blondes is where my talent comes in. Many women in Mexico wanted to be blonde, even though that was really had to do transitioning that dark tone to light/bright tone that was something I became known for in my city in Mexico. When I moved to Dallas, I fell in love with the city and clients. Most of my clients are already blonde, so it was an easier job for me which even allowed me to do more with contrast and tone with color working with lighter shades.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No job is easy, the hardest part for me is that it is a very competitive market especially out here in Dallas with blondes. I am a single mom, so it’s hard for me to go out there and network while other stylist does. I get most of my clients via word of mouth/referrals which I greatly appreciate all the love and support. I love what I do, I wouldn’t change it for the world! I love it when a client sits in my chair, we consult what we should do, we get to it and they just open up and talk to me about what is going on with their life. It also helps me do their hair a certain way. I want to style your hair in comparison to your personality. Your hair and personality need to match.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I work at William Carr Salon, an amazing salon company. I love what I do and where I do it. I have been there for almost a full year and could not have picked a better place for myself. I specialize in color and style. I love to educate my clients and some of our new stylists.
I definitely believe that what sets me apart is the hard work that I put into understanding the needs of all my clients. I love to sit down and truly try to capture what their needs and wants are. I love to educate them through the process and have a great time doing it. If my clients had any say, they would probably say my laugh is what sets me apart because I love to laugh!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Honestly, I love where I am at right now. I wish I had more time in my hands to network more to get more people in the door but outside of that, I love the route I took to get where I am today.
