Today we’d like to introduce you to Carol Davis.
Carol, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My husband, Blake. and I opened Crave in February 2014. We always dreamed of opening a small business together. I was a stay at home mom and Blake worked in the wholesale nursery landscaping business. Blake was a foodie and we had a few ideas but decided to meet in the middle on popcorn. It was a chance for us to follow our dreams to create a legacy to pass on to our kids.
Blake unexpectedly passed away last year and I was left grieving and responsible for the business and our two children. After a short time off, I returned to Crave and found that it really kept me busy. It has really helped me through the grieving process.
Crave has also given me a way to keep Blake’s legacy alive. We’ve kept all his recipes, we make small batches of popcorn with all handmade ingredients, and it’s always fresh. Blake was rather picky about his product and we haven’t changed a thing. I think Blake would be proud.
I designed the store to be an experience and I love seeing customers come in and leave happy. My customers and employees have become family.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I mentioned before, my husband passing away has been my biggest obstacle. He was an integral part of our business and I have struggled to learn and manage all aspects of the business on my own. It has been challenging to find the right clientele and proving ourselves in the industry. It has taken time to establish relationships in the community and in the corporate world. My involvement in the local chamber has helped a great deal.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Crave Popcorn Co. – what should we know?
At Crave Popcorn Co., we pop gourmet corn in-house daily. To ensure the highest quality, we only produce in small batches, paying close attention to sifting out those un-popped kernels and hulls. Using fresh ingredients and premium Guittard chocolate, we hand drizzle and coat our signature flavors creating decadent gourmet popcorn.
In our shop, we carry a variety of vintage candies and sodas that will take you back in time. You’ll feel like you’re at the old general store where you rode your bike to as a kid. We’d love for you to pop by for a visit to enjoy some samples on the house. We promise you’ll want to stay a while.
We specialize in corporate gifting and I am most proud of the relationships that we have built with both our corporate and personal clients.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel that forming relationships with customers as well as providing a quality product is most important to my success. We also have a great team at Crave that have helped us build these relationships. I have been fortunate in finding employees who care about Crave as much as I do. They truly are like family to me.
