Today we’d like to introduce you to Carron Short.
Carron, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 1956, my Memaw opened her first café, The Pink Elephant. Over the next three decades she owned and operated several cafés along Hwy 175 in Southeast Dallas County with the most popular being Stewarts located at 175 & Buckner Blvd.
She became well known in the area for her pies; and even other restaurant owners sold her pies in their stores. Some of the best memories I have as a child are of making and delivering pies with my Memaw.
She died when I was 13 but before she did, she passed on a love for food, the love of preparing it and best of all the love of serving and sharing it with others.
I personally serve as the Creative Director, Lead Planner, Floral Designer and Cake Artist for my family owned and operated company Sugar City celebrations. I am certified in wedding planning and design and have a passion for helping couples begin their lives together in style providing luxury they can afford.
My addition to this family food legacy is cake! Beautiful pieces of artwork that look too good to eat but taste too good not to, made with memories of my childhood, experience of my history and with passion in my heart. In early 2000 I started a hobby business doing planning and executing intimate celebrations of all kinds. At the same time, I also made cakes, while I also worked as a Director of Administration for Texas Discovery Gardens. In 2010, this amazing nonprofit fell on hard financial times as many companies did during the recession and needed to cut their costs while trying to increase revenue simultaneously. This resulted in the need to be creative, so the Board of Texas Discovery Gardens and I made “lemoncello cake out of lemons,” by creating a unique partnership to solve that problem. The hobby business I started with my Memaw as inspiration grew into a full-service special event, catering and venue management company specializing in weddings.
We are committed to making sure your event is nothing short of spectacular, filled with love, laughter, and magical memories seamlessly executed with grace. Since 2010 the Texas Discovery Gardens/Sugar City partnership has allowed the venue to increase their revenue and provide mission related staff with the time needed to educate more adults and children about ways to sustain the natural world. As the partnership has grown their annual rental income has increased by over 200% with a portion of every service we provide to our mutual client going back into Texas Discovery Gardens to support their programs.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been surprisingly smooth. I feel the path was paved for me in a divine kind of way. I didn’t set out to do this, but I am so thankful that the road as led here. I wouldn’t want to do anything else, I just want to do it more; for more non-profits to help them increase their budget to allow them to fulfill their mission.
