Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassie Reid, Ph.D., LPC-S.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Reid. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I began my academic journey as an economics major in West Virginia, but after taking a counseling class in college, I realized that I could not only pursue my true passion, helping people discover their true identity, that I could also get paid doing it. I knew in that moment, even though I was still completing my bachelor’s degree, that I would need to pursue a doctorate. This would allow me to be fully equipped to be able to face head-on any counseling situation I might encounter as a licensed professional counselor. I was open to the adventure ahead! Unexpectedly, I landed in North Texas with a choice between completing a masters at either UNT or TCU. Still amazing to me today, the door swung wide open at TCU and though I knew little of the school then, I’m a proud Horned Frog alum today! Next stop was a doctorate but after having some opportunities not materialize, I was able to enter the program I was seeking at TWU in Denton, TX graduating with my Ph.D. in Family Therapy not long after my 30th birthday. Every stop along the way was not what I planned but I can see the purpose in each one today. While completing both my masters and doctorate, I had opportunities to gain real world experience with people from a variety of age groups and backgrounds. In a North Texas school district I began my professional work with emotionally disturbed students, then served as a high school counselor, joined a National Institute of Health/UT Southwestern Medical Center/University of Texas at Arlington research study and worked with clients as part of the UT Southwestern Medical Center Family Studies Center. Diverse experiences that added valuable skills and insight that still prove valuable to my work today. Cassie Reid Counseling was established in Southlake, TX in April 2010, just over a year prior to my graduating with my doctorate. After 7 years our focus is still on working with individuals and families to help discover their true identities so they can become all they are destined to be.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of the biggest challenges from my perspective, is being true to yourself in an industry that presents people who may demand that you do things their way. Owning a small business is no easy feat. They do not prepare you in school for what it takes to truly run a company well. They don’t tell you that there are truly no “vacation days” and that the IRS doesn’t care that you are in a one room office just starting out without a legal team or an accounting department. Overall, the challenges have only made me and my husband want to fight harder for what we believe in and press past the roadblocks onto a bigger cause.
Cassie Reid Counseling – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Cassie Reid Counseling is a private practice that specializes in a tailor-made counseling experience. What sets us apart is that we want to get to know the person, their unique set of circumstances so we can develop a plan to combat those circumstances that is also a perfect fit for them. We don’t believe in cookie cutter therapy. We are truly in the identity business. We have multiple therapists on staff and typically are able to combat any problem with the specialties they bring to the table. We believe in the combination of the spiritual and the clinical which allows people to combine what they believe with what can help them clinically.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is a difficult word to define because in my opinion, it is truly about small wins that accumulate to a bigger life beyond what you could imagine. Success is defined in my mind as getting to do what I love and am passionate about. Helping others find out who they are meant to be and what they are called to do makes me feel more successful than any paycheck or bonus. Allowing others the space to find the root of a problem is such a fulfilling endeavor to celebrate with the people who trust me each day.
