Meet Chad and Nellie Montgomery of Civil Pour in North Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chad and Nellie Montgomery.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My wife Nellie and I got into beer back in 2008, when visiting San Diego. Texas didn’t have a ton of beer culture at the time, but California certainly did. Within a few months, we started organizing local beer meetups and traveling out of state to various beer destinations. Within a couple of years, we had decided to visit the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado. Realizing nothing similar existed in Dallas, we set out to organize the Big Texas Beer Fest! After several years organizing beer festivals all over Texas, we wanted to find ways to support the beer industry year-round. Along the way, we found out about specialty coffee and decided the two would be a perfect match. And thus, Civil Pour was born.

Civil Pour is the culmination of a decade of beer knowledge, visiting dozens, if not hundreds of beer and coffee destinations over the years, and our relentless pursuit to present the best of both worlds to coffee and beer lovers alike.

Has it been a smooth road?
Running a business is never smooth sailing, and there are always lessons to be learned. Gaining approval from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission to do a festival that’s unlike anything they’ve seen or heard of before, was a challenge to say the least. And then anyone who’s ever owned a restaurant can tell you how difficult the permitting and building process is. From idea to open, Civil Pour took three years. And while we have no idea what the future holds yet, we’re excited for it!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Civil Pour is a specialty coffee shop, good beer bar, growler filling station, and place to grab a bite to eat. We are known for serving the best coffee and beer anywhere in the world. We’re most proud of our open-mindedness and mentorship inside our company culture. We encourage employees to create new ideas, whether they’re for our business or their own in the future, and hope to help them on their journey. In terms of setting ourselves apart from others, we start each customer interaction hoping to leave them better than when they entered our doors. We utilize beer pouring equipment and coffee brewing equipment that is in some cases, only found in our shop across Texas. We pour the best beer, brew the best coffee, and do so in unconventional (but super high quality) methods to present elevated customer experiences.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The Dallas coffee and beer culture are both evolving, and continue to get better all the time. We think it’s a good time to introduce new techniques and methods for serving both, to create unique moments for our guests who are looking for something new and different. We’re absolutely a great place for beer people or coffee people. The bridge between each isn’t so far apart. We’ve found that we often introduce coffee drinkers to beer and vice versa. Our attitude is always open-minded, and our staff are well-trained to make suggestions based on a guest’s personal tastes.
