Meet Chad Plumlee of Cadence Cyclery in McKinney and Highland Village

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chad Plumlee.

Chad, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m the owner of Cadence Cyclery and Giant Lakeside. My customers sometimes ask me why I got into the bike business. It all started when I was a kid. I spent a large portion of my childhood pestering the guys at our local bike shop in downtown Sherman. It was like a second home and I always wanted to recreate that type of atmosphere one day.

I stayed on two wheels, racing motocross throughout college and eventually spent 10 years in the pharmaceutical industry. In 2011, I decided the time was right to pursue my passion and I opened the first Cadence Cyclery in McKinney, TX. I later opened a location in Highland Village and recently had the grand opening of the first Giant Bicycles concept store in Flower Mound, TX.

Has it been a smooth road?
If you are passionate about your career, achieving your goals make the struggles worth it. Any start-up small business has struggles. These include finding the right staff, product mix, finances, etc. The bicycle industry is in a major change in philosophy and approach to brick and mortal retail sales. We face challenges from online competitors, as well as a shift in buying patterns from our customers.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Cadence Cyclery – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Our mantra is “Experience Modern Cycling with Old-School Service” and my staff and I take that to heart with every customer who walks in the door. A bicycle shop can be intimidating to a new cyclist, but I believe an old-school service approach makes for a different experience and this is the thing we are most known for. Combining this experience with the most current industry knowledge allows us to be integrated into the community and deliver true value to all our patrons. Our goal is to make customers for life and this is one of the things I am most proud of. This includes the customer retention and the long-term relationships I have developed.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Our first shop is located in downtown McKinney and the area is amazing and one of the reasons McKinney was rated best place to live in Money magazine a few years ago, but as it grows so do some issues, like parking and cost of living.
