Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles King.
Charles, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Young Black Genius was created in 2013 while I was still in college. One year, while I was on spring break with nothing to do, I was sitting down on my computer researching black history and just our legacy. I realized that there was a lack of clothing with a message that reflected the greatness and legacy of black people and their achievements. It’s been a slow grind to get where I am today but I don’t regret anything.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road to get to where I am hasn’t been smooth and there are still speed bumps along the road I’m traveling. I’ve rebranded two or three times. There are nights I sleep like two hours because I’m up grinding, thinking of new designs, marketing strategies, reaching out to other brands. Not only that I still work a 9-5. So I mean I’m in it for the long haul.
Please tell us about your business.
My company is an online business we specialize in pro-black apparel that reflects the black history, pride, legacy and still stylish streetwear. I have phone cases, tote bags, t-shirts, hoodies, joggers and more. I feel like what sets us apart is the thought that goes into what we put on apparel it’s not copying a brand or a trend. I think I’m most proud of having sold clothes to countries outside the US and some connections I’ve made with a couple of my favorite artist.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I just moved here about two months ago the only thing I really dislike is how hot it is down here lol. But I love the abundance of black people and black-owned businesses in the DFW area.
