Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Collier.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Having grown up homeschooled, I had the time and freedom to explore art, and really define my interests at a young age.
At 15 I made my first animated short, it got accepted into the Taos Shortz film festival, and from there I landed an animated music video gig. That video ended up premiering on MTV in Europe and winning best music video of the year in that category.
I started working with small companies on animated projects, including the company behind iStopMotion, the software I was using at the time. I also spent some time exploring blacksmithing and other forms of craftsmanship. About 5 years ago I started pursuing more traditional photography and videography and started working with local businesses on content for their websites and social media. I’m currently working part time as a content creator, and actively trying to build a life as a digital nomad. My goal for the next 5 years is to be able to support myself while traveling the world by telling visual stories.
Please tell us about your art.
My goal as an artist is to capture the seemingly universal need for exploration. People are driven to push themselves beyond what they thought possible by engaging in adventure. The force behind our will to explore is different for everyone, but it all leads to the same place.
To me that’s the real human story. Curiosity is what got us to the moon, to every landmass on earth, but unfortunately, it’s not always what drives us in the day to day. I feel as an artist, if I can tell stories that capture this aspect of the human spirit, it’ll inspire other to live their lives with a more adventurous mind. We need that more now than ever in the age of social media and instant gratification. All the Instagram likes in the world won’t top spending the day exploring a forest or chasing a sunset with close friends.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
It can be really isolating. The thing that really changed my life was Instagram, specifically instameets, or photo walks. I’ve expanded my connections in the Dallas art scene exponentially because of Instagram. You just need to find some local artists you like and message them. Most people are open to collaborate.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
For now you can find me on Instagram and Vimeo. YouTube channel coming soon!
