Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Francesca.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Charlie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My entire high school career was spent in my journalism program, so I always assumed I would go to college for that! I even got various scholarships/grants for my grades. But when it came time to make a decision, I decided I would really want to do something more creative. I can’t draw or paint, but I knew I always had an internal passion for hair. I was always getting sent home from school for having too unnaturally colored hair lol!
So, I went with my gut and at 18, I moved out, enrolled in cosmetology school and made a career out of a hobby. And now, I’m really not sure what else I would do! Hair has become my life.
Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t been the smoothest road, that is for sure. But my struggles have been relatively minimal in comparison to others. I think my biggest complication in this journey has been finding my perfect “hair home.” Finding the right environment for both my personality and creativity to really thrive.
I also became pregnant with my daughter within my first year of being behind the chair full time. It didn’t necessarily make it harder but it definitely lit a flame underneath me.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
When people sit in my chair, I want them to feel comfortable right out the gate. I try to be as much of myself as possible and kind of skip the chit chat. I have grown so very close to my clients because of this. Simply letting my guard down and being vulnerable during what some consider a very “scary” thing (like if they have had a really bad haircut and are terrified of getting it cut again….) has helped create a bond that I think helps set me apart from the rest.
As far as specialties go, vivid colors are my absolute favorite things to do! The complete creative control I can have behind an unnatural color is so fun. It’s not my bread and butter but it keeps me on my toes when I get someone who requests one!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think the luck I have had with networking has helped the absolute most. I made a good friend through social media, and with that, our kids became friends as well! She actually went on to encourage me to go to Panther City Salon, which was my first introduction to being a booth renting stylist. In the almost two years I was there, I grew more as a stylist than I had ever! It also leads me to meet more friends who then brought me to my current location- South Main District Salon. So, these weird connections I’ve made in my personal life have also intermingled with my business life and have helped shape my career in ways I had always hoped for.
