

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chavez Turner.
Chavez, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My story began in Central Texas with a loving and supportive family. It was a humble upbringing, but it built character and work ethic. One of my role models growing up was my grandfather. He gave me inspiration and showed me how to treat people, and give them your best work every time they pay for a service. He only had a sixth-grade education but was so wise regarding business. He would tell me that I should go to college because he felt like I was not capable of taking over his small engine repair business due to my allergies. He was so right!
So, I knew college was my destination after high school. I obtaining my Bachelor of Business Administration Degree majoring in Human Resource Management from Sam Houston State University and later an MBA from Amberton University. I had an opportunity to work for one of the most recognized brands in the world, McDonald’s in the Houston Region as an HR Consultant as my first job. In my role, I was responsible for restaurants that were owned by McDonald’s corporation and had some of the best mentors.
In college, I took a course that gave us an overview of all the majors that were offered by the Business department. Human Resources and I were a match from day one. Some ask, why? I truly believe it was the things that my grandfather had instilled in me about valuing people and helping others. I look at my managers and leaders that I support as my customers. It was brought to my attention that I am a different type of Human Resources professional due to wanting to support the employees, as well as protect the brand and managers. I have witnessed some Human Resource professionals only support the company’s interests, and that leaves the employees on their own to figure it out, or on an island. Not me, I don’t mind challenging the organization or top leaders for a win-win for all parties.
I left corporate America to start my own HR Consulting Firm (TSSG Consulting) in 2016. It was time for me to focus on my passion and purpose of helping businesses with their Human Resource practices, and connecting their business strategy with their people strategy. Also, one of the things I disliked most about some of the organizations I worked for would be the push for-profit over people. (Example: Laying off workers to pay out top executive their bonuses.) I understand that if you do not take care of your employees, there will not be a business to support. TSSG looks for those organizations that need affordable solutions and consulting on matters that will enhance the profitability of their organization.

TSSG is working on some amazing out of the box solutions for businesses of all sizes. The newest adventure is launching our Professional Development Institute and our Insurance Brokerage Firm. The content is an affordable and practical way for those that want to transition their career into Human Resources, Project Management, Management, or just want to develop themselves. The programs will be taught online through video conferencing with experienced instructors. These programs are hands-on and come with practice applying the knowledge obtained with case studies and scenarios. The participants will be able to present solutions for concerns or opportunities with the workplace or in their personal life. Also, once the student passes the exam, they will obtain a certification or diploma from an accredited source. My team is here to work with you and your team.
Has it been a smooth road?
Starting my business had and has its challenges daily. The challenges could be financial, determine the structure, and marketing or promoting your business. I have always enjoyed networking and attending events but learning how to sell is much harder than it looks. So, we have had to invest in our sales and marketing team, which is not cheap. I look at challenges and obstacles as an opportunity to grow and learn something new. I try to use my resources around me to minimize some of the obstacles in business and life.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Being Headquartered in DFW has been amazing. The amount of resources and organizations that are willing to work with our organization has been a dream come true. I have connected with individuals that have large platforms from church leaders to politicians, and very successful business owners. Some of my largest contracts have come from churches and restaurant franchisees that are interested in taking their business to another level.
One of the areas of improvement that I would suggest for the area is that we could do a better job promoting one another within our community. There are a lot of new startups that have amazing products and services, but some of the more established businesses don’t give startups a chance to obtain their business.
