Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Davis.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Chelsea. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always loved photography, but it wasn’t until my senior year in college that I really felt it become part of me. I was studying abroad in Seville, Spain and was overwhelmed with the stories there, stories in the unique history of the architecture, the rich culture everywhere you looked, the beauty and passion of the people… I wanted to capture it all, and boy did I try. I swear I never put my camera down. I graduated from college as soon as I got back from abroad and began my corporate job in the “real world”. It didn’t take long before I realized I wasn’t doing what I loved. I felt bored and I missed the fulfillment of capturing and telling stories. So I upgraded my camera and started shooting as much as I could in my free time — our travels, our family, anything and everything. True to character, I was determined to find my style and hone my craft, so I took a leave of absence from work and really threw myself into photography — studying, practicing, attending workshops, learning Photoshop and Lightroom. I put my notice in later that year and never looked back. I have been capturing and sharing stories with my camera for more than a decade now, and I could not be happier.
Has it been a smooth road?
In my experience, anything worthwhile seems to have its fair share of ups and downs; photography is no different. I think the hardest part, in the beginning, was finding my own style and not being influenced or discouraged by the art that others were creating. I love and appreciate many styles of photography so it was hard not to be governed by it when I created my own work, but I stayed focused on the type of images I wanted to create, how I wanted people to feel when they looked at them, and I gained a lot of confidence in my work. That led to consistency and a style I am proud of. I also figured out that if I allow myself to experiment and try different things with my personal photos when I feel inspired to do so, it helps sustain the creative side of me that loves to change things up! Win-win!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a photographer who specializes in capturing moments and milestones that help tell a family’s unique story. I want every one of my clients to have the most relaxed, authentic experience while we are together, knowing that the images we are creating are as honest and real as they are beautiful because I am passionate about showing families that great joy can be found in the most ordinary of moments. My clients really resonate with that, and I am proud of the connections and lasting friendships I have made with them because of it.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Since COVID-19 has recently turned our industry on its head, photographers have had to adjust, re-evaluate, and implement new business practices in order to move forward. It’s hard to truly predict how things will look when we are on the other side of this but I have already seen a creative shift in many photographers, a real change in perspective. We are feeling the pull toward more authentic work, creating timeless images that go beyond what’s trendy and pretty. And boy, we have never appreciated connection and togetherness more than we do right now. I am excited to see the work that will come from all of this.
