Meet Chris Avante of Atelier Barber Co. in Cedar Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Avante. Chris and his team share his story with us below.

Before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about the backstory.
Chris was born and raised in Carrolton. While he loved the area and loved growing up there, he definitely claims to have felt a sense of misdirection. He ended up dropping out of high school as a result. When he decided to attend the Ogle School of Cosmetology, he found that sense of direction. He specialized in hairdressing and barbering. Chris Avante recently opened his dream salon – Atelier Barber Co. on Cedar Springs Road. “My mission for Atelier is to have an upscale feel accompanied by good customer service. Our clients are family.”

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say it’s been a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been smooth, but Chris has persevered to become successful in his vocation. Avante gained national recognition in 2016 when he commissioned a nearly two-story mural of Lee Harvey Oswald to be painted on the side of his rustic barbershop in Oak Cliff. He defended his decision in an interview with local NBC affiliate KXAS-TV, noting that his intention was to contribute a piece of art – as well as history – to the neighborhood. In doing this, Chris solidified his place in the Bishop Arts community as an important player.

Tell us more about the business. What else should we know?
Like everything Chris Avante does, the word “Atelier” came with a deeper meaning to build on the big picture of this new salon. “Atelier” can be defined as “a workshop or studio, especially one used by an artist or designer”. This definition resonated with Chris and the special space he wanted to create for himself and for his clients. He created a space that one would most likely akin to the upscale barbershops of LA or NY but replaced the snobby sentiments with familial love. Their reputable, experienced stylists specialize in precision classic cuts, hot towel razor shaves, and 5-star beard trims. Atelier brings an elevated, yet humble approach to modern style. Christian also launched his own men’s hair product line called “CHRISTIAN AVANTE”.

Has luck played a meaningful role in Chris’ life and business?
Chris would definitely say that he believes in perseverance and hard work over everything. That’s why he came up with the Straight-A Cuts initiative. Chris Avante wants to encourage young students to continue to strive for success. Through the end of December, Atelier Barber Co. is offering any student at the nearby Sam Houston Elementary School a $10.00 haircut, one-third of the cost of a normal children’s haircut. The catch? They must present a valid and current straight-A report card. The initiative, called Straight-A Cuts, is geared to motivate students to understand that working hard can be rewarding. Avante plans to roll out additional community outreach efforts in the future.
