Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris O’Connor.
Chris, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Having a creative outlet has always been a necessity for me, I tend to get a bit out of sorts if I’m not not constantly creating, be it drawing or music. If you saw my loft, it’s basically a collection of instruments for it. Guitars, paints, pencils, cameras, etc.
I’ve always felt like I spoke a different language than most people, and early on I discovered a passion for photography and how it seemed to ease that frustration. I actually started in skate photography of all things, grabbing a disposable camera from the drugstore and taking pictures of my friends. Then eventually moving onto cars, then families and weddings, and now working my way into fashion where I love the intersection of creativity and commerce.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a mostly smooth road, but I definitely spent a lot of time focusing on the wrong things and feel like I’m just now finding myself creatively after a decade of shooting. I spent a lot of time shooting families, events, and weddings because that was “what a photographer does”. It didn’t fuel my fire so to speak, so I burnt out quite often.
Now I’ve learned to only shoot what I enjoy. However I do strive to hone my skills, which one can only do by leaving their comfort zone. If you’re not struggling, you’re not growing.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m a photographer that’s focused somewhere on the intersection of portraiture, fashion, and fine art. I’m not really sure what I’m known for, but I get “soft” and “organic” pretty often. My work is pretty minimal in both content and editing.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I’ve lived in LA and stayed in NYC for a bit as well, and they’re definitely where you’d want to be for photography, but Dallas has its place. I’ve noticed a growing trend here over the past few years.
