Meet Christan McCord of Meccafox in Burleson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christan McCord.

Christan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I never thought I would be a Boutique owner (or any business owner for that matter). This all started because I was a single mom and even with the 9-5 job I had, it still wasn’t enough to pay for daycare. I knew I couldn’t go much longer living paycheck to paycheck and still not having enough to cover daycare. So at that point, I decided I had to start using the only artistic bone in my body to make something people would buy. I learned how to hand sew from my grandmother when I was 13 years old. At first, I started sewing infinity scarves and selling them on Etsy. Boy, that didn’t work out well… I think I sold like four. So then I though, hmmm there has to be something else I can make and sell. Bracelets! Started making and selling beaded bracelets also in my Etsy shop.

Those worked out pretty well for about six whole months. I sold a lot more than I ever expected. Of course, me having to be a busy bee I had to find something else to add to my shop to make more money. That is when I started making and selling earrings with tiny designs in them. OH, THE WORK THAT WAS! It took so much time that I stopped working and worked selling on my Etsy shop full time. When I say full time I mean literally any hour I wasn’t asleep, I was making earrings. The earrings are what took off, pretty soon it took over my apartment with supplies and earrings drying everywhere with glue.

I ended up having to move into a house to have enough room to work. I started reaching out to stores about selling my earrings and pretty soon after emailing every single store I could find in not only Texas but all over the US… I began to get wholesale orders. Fast forward I don’t even know how long and before I knew it I was making and shipping huge orders to over 200 stores. I ended up having to call in the troops! That is when I hired my first employee and grew from there.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The struggle was real. I had my “copy cats” who harassed me daily on social media and attempted to steal all of my personal and even wholesale customers. Luckily, I had worked very hard from the beginning to keep a good relationship with my customers on social media and through email. I treated everyone with great customer service and it kept them loyal to me. I still remember crying for days in my apartment closet on the floor when my etsy shop got shut down. You know how I said I started making earrings with tiny images? Well, I had one pair on my shop that I didn’t “own” the rights to and they shut me down for copyright infringement.

I then couldn’t make ANY money or sell anything ever again on etsy. That’s when I started reaching out to stores to sell my new druzy earrings I was making (with no images). I literally thought my life was over when my shop got shut down, it was my only work, my only income and what felt like all I had. Luckily, I don’t give up and I knew I had to keep going and that’s when my wholesale took off selling to stores.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Meccafox – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
After we gained a large following from our earring business, we then decided to start designing and printing shirts to sell to stores. Since I already had a relationship with so many stores, It was easy to also sell them the shirts. That then made our shirt side of the business grow FAST.

We have been doing wholesale and growing our social media following for seven years, so when we opened our first (totally unexpected) boutique, our followers FREAKED. They can finally see and go into a store that they have been following for years. We try really hard to be different from the other stores here in our area. We are young, trendy, modern and up to date on our products. I feel like we are different because of how I got here. People know my story and are loyal customers because they know what this business came from.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Actually YES! We have our 1 Year Anniversary party September 28th 10-7pm. Featuring Kendra Scott 10-1pm. Free mimosas, free margaritas, and local vendors will be set up as well all day. It’s going to be so fun!
