Meet Christina Cheng of Allen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Cheng.

Hi Christina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I wish I had a more dramatic origin story but everything came about unexpectedly and organically. Having volunteered at some capacity my entire life, it was reflex to want to show my own children not only the joy in giving but emphasize the power they have to impact the world and those around them. What started as something my boys and I would do in our spare time turned into a family affair with my mom and dad helping and then grew to a circle of friends intiative with our friends jumping in and now we are a fully active 501c3 nonprofit.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The work life/home life/nonprofit life is a delicate balancing act. Navigating the micro nonprofit world as a novice has also been challenging but it is the challenge that motivates me to do better each time I meet adversity. Having a whole nonprofit as a side hustle will test you, humble you, and provide the growth and understanding that will give you unmatched peace and purpose.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I don’t really have a title that I am comfortable with. I have been labeled a nonprofit founder, a community leader, and organizer but I feel as though those titles don’t quite capture everything. Maybe matchmaker? My micro nonprofit specializes in filling in the gaps. I match specific needs with individual donors. I curate service projects to fit the needs and interests of the volunteer. I believe that service should be personal and in doing so, we make it a lifestyle to look out for those in need.

What I am proud of is being able to show in the form of metrics, stories, pictures, and real life examples that this little proof of concept that is my nonprofit, works. We have shown consistency and growth in the last 3 years. We have been adaptable as needs arise and responsive to emergent situations. We have been able to rally our community to help those who need it the most and we have had fun and made connections doing it. I believe ultimately that is what sets Under My Umbrella apart. We have all the big nonprofit credentials with the small town feel that is the foundation of my nonprofit. The individualized care. The connections made. The sense of community.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Kind-hearted individuals in our community definitely deserve the credit. Under My Umbrella is powered by individuals in our community to serve those in our community. Some donate monetarily. Some donate their time or expertise. Others advocate on behalf of Under My Umbrella. I am grateful for every person who has faith in my npo and invests to sustain it. It is ultimately is investing in the good in people and working together to uplift those who need it the most.
