Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Singh.
Christina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, I started putting on makeup and doing my hair, even though I was not really allowed to wear makeup. I actually started getting good at it, especially doing the eyes. Then, people started asking me to do their eye makeup for events. Fast forward to 20, I started doing makeup for weddings and other special events, which eventually enabled me to quit my full-time job in Human Resources to pursue makeup full-time.
14 years later, I never thought something that started as me trying to fit in, would take me all over the country, assisting makeup and hair for two TV Shows, TV commercials, teaching Masterclasses for TOM FORD Beauty and being able to work with the most amazing clients such as THE Bobbi Brown and the US Ambassador to France, Jamie McCourt as well as the countless brides and strong successful women I have had the pleasure of doing hair and makeup for.
Beauty has definitely evolved as something so much more than just putting makeup on. It’s being able to bring out the natural beauty I, the artist sees, so the client, no matter who she is or what she does can feel empowered and beautiful in her own skin.
Now that I am a mother of two girls (5 years old and 1.5 years), I think differently and want other women who are always on the go as I am, to feel empowered and beautiful not only when they wear makeup but comfortable in their style as well. I felt that busy women don’t always have the time to curate outfits or try clothes on let alone do full-on Instagram makeup and hair. I wanted there to be a simpler way. So, one of my best friends and I partnered to create Clique Fashion Boutique. We curate comfortable and stylish wardrobes for the woman on the go with our mobile boutique and I also teach the basics for makeup application to make things quick and easy.
I’m excited to be able to take my love and passion for beauty and style and share it with other women.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
OMG no, it has not been easy at all. Although I have the support of my family now, it has been a struggle trying to balance my work, social life, husband and having two young kids. Being an Entrepreneur is not the traditional career path South Asian kids are raised to take, let alone for a woman to take that path. So it was definitely an adjustment explaining to certain people including part of my family that this was my dream and I know I will be successful. My parents and husband, on the other hand, have been very supportive from the beginning as my dad is an entrepreneur himself and my husband comes from an entrepreneurial family. So, it was different, they understood the difficulties and challenges and were confident I could handle it. My husband has supported me and been such a constant in my life. He always encouraged me and when I felt like giving up, he would send me memes and motivational quotes to get me through my day. He’s definitely been my backbone.
Some of my current challenges are juggling two businesses and making sure I set aside time for my family. In this day and age, it’s a necessity to be on the phone or computer to communicate with clients or vendors. So, it is hard hearing my daughter say, “Mommy you’re always on your phone” when I have to respond to emails or make sure products are on our site and posted on social media. Because anything I say is just an excuse to a 5-year-old when all they want to do is spend time with you.
Another challenge is making sure both businesses stand out without compromising our core beliefs. With social media, as much as it connects us together, it can also make us compete against each other in a negative way and I’m just not about that. I believe it’s more important to create community over competition.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am the proud owner and co-owner of two businesses.
I started my first business, Beauty On The Go Dallas in 2013, right before I had my first daughter. I am the owner and main makeup artist and hairstylist.
My company provides concierge beauty services that bring the services to you, Whether you need a blowout, just makeup or makeup and hair, I got you covered. I also offer airbrush makeup, FX makeup, and services for TV, Photoshoots and weddings. I also have a team of professional artists to accommodate large wedding parties or events. I am known for my ability to connect with anyone and find the best look to capture their natural beauty and make them feel beautiful. I am very proud of the fact I have never advertised. I have been blessed enough to have had amazing clients who have advertised for me and choose to work with me and my team again.
I started my second company with one of my best friends and our company is called Clique Fashion Boutique. Since we are both moms on the go, we wanted to make fashion and the buying process easy for women on the go. We also collaborate with my beauty experience with our mobile boutique to create a unique one-stop-shop. We do Facebook LIVE’s on our closed Facebook Group and post on our Instagram and we have a website that our items can be purchased from as well. We curate outfits that fit each season and trend and try the items on so our customers see us describe the fabric and fit in the comfort of their home.
We are most proud of the fact we had no idea how people would respond but we put ourselves out there and have been able to connect with so many different women and be their sole provider of clothing! We have customers who only shop with us now, which has caused us to diversify very quickly in what we were carrying and the sizes we carry as well. It’s crazy to think we only started this company less than four months ago. I feel like one of the things that set us apart is our commitment to our customers and how important it is to connect with them. I also feel because we are a mobile boutique we have have been able to bring our goods and services to the customer and be a one-stop-shop.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up being a tomboy, playing sports, Basketball mostly. I was not interested in wearing makeup or doing my hair and I pretty much hated dressing up. Then, around the 7th grade, I started really liking boys and felt myself wanting to be apart of the “pretty girls” group with the hope that the boys would like me and then, I would fit in with the girls. It was already difficult being one of the only South Asians in the school and I just wanted to feel pretty and fit in. So, that’s kinda how I got into makeup. I am the oldest of three kids and I have a brother who is five years younger and a sister seven years younger. I grew up as a Missionary kid. I was homeschooled during most of elementary and high school because we traveled around the world about eight months out of the year. During the other half of elementary and middle school, I went to a private school. The traveling enabled me to learn multiple languages and meet a ton of people. I think that’s where my ability to connect and start conversations with pretty much anyone came from. Although I didn’t appreciate all the traveling when I was a kid, I most definitely do now.
I was really into Basketball and Choir. Those were my favorite things in school. I come from a very musical family where everyone either sings or plays two or more instruments so that was really fun for me. I love to laugh and my family says I have a contagious laugh so either that people are either laughing with me or at me. I am very close to my parents and siblings. We all have pretty dry humor and sometimes people don’t always get our jokes. I loved listening to LIVE music with my siblings and traveling with them. My brother and I used to tease our sister a lot when we were kids but I think my brother and I can agree, we can’t live without her. I used to paint and I learned how to cook Indian food from scratch when I was 14. Overall, I’ve always been pretty goofy and I laugh at my own jokes.. and all my friends make fun of me for it.
