Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Stewart.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Christine. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I was pregnant with my first child seventeen years ago, I began to look at the products I was using on myself and in my home and the food I was eating. What an eye-opening experience to discover that just because something is sold in the store doesn’t mean that it is safe for use or consumption—many of them can do serious harm to our bodies and our planet. I began to try to find safer alternatives to my favorite products. While there are lots of companies out there offering green options, there were just some products that I couldn’t find—so I made my own. As friends would see the things my family and I were using, they would encourage me to sell them. Reluctantly, I began to do so. And there began For My Kids.
When asked why I named the company “For My Kids”, I tell people that all of our products are really the result of my desire to protect my own children from harm—hence the name For My Kids. While these products are safe enough “for my kids” they are made for everyone. I think the whole concept behind going green is an altruistic one, so the green-conscious people that are interested in these types of alternatives generally have the same desires to protect their families by making their homes safer and to protect the planet for future generations. The name For My Kids invokes that same feeling of unselfish concern for the welfare of others that is behind the green movement.
Has it been a smooth road?
I am a researcher and creator, not a marketing and salesperson; so, the whole promotion part of the business has been a challenge for me.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I make products that are gentle on our bodies and on the planet. My main focus is Happy Hands Hand Wash. It came about because I wanted to protect my children from harmful germs, but a lot of the products out there that claim to kill germs can also do harm to little bodies. Our formula is very soothing and contains witch hazel and essential oils that are commonly known to have antiseptic, antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antifungal properties and they work to cleanse, soften, heal, and stimulate your skin. Our formula is approved for sale in Europe under EN1040 (anti-bacterial) and EN1275. In laboratory testing, it was as effective as the alcohol gels against bacteria and fungi and it performed as well with 10 seconds of rubbing as hospital soaps did with 30 seconds of scrubbing.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes! There are certainly pockets of people who are very concerned with being healthy and taking care of our planet. For someone starting out, I would recommend starting small and getting a good foothold in one area before spreading your business out.
