Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher North.
Christopher, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I moved to Texas in 2007 with my mother, a graphic designer and entrepreneur. She inspired me to start my own business from what I only considered a hobby. Early on, all I knew was that I loved photography- and it’s a dream to be able to do what you love all your life. The reality is dreams run on money. I began charging for portraiture during high school when I first saw a market in seasonal work- prom, homecoming, and Valentine’s Day were my busiest times. As I got older and progressed in skill, I found it necessary to expand upon the basic services of a photographer and redefine what a photoshoot entails. Currently, I’m attending a college that focus on the applied arts of fashion and advertising with the goal to expand my services to include styling and public relations. I believe this is the future of imaging and I’m excited to be among the first to lead the way.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There were, actually, a great many struggles. In Texas, a person under the age of 24 can’t get financial aid for school without their parent’s tax information- essentially, their parent’s consent. My parents wanted me to be an engineer, or work in coding so, needless to say, I was not able to go to college for a while after high school- because I knew what I wanted to do and I’ve never been a person to compromise. From a very young age, I began to teach myself about business and photography by reading as much as I could about the industry. There was always a learning curve, or that sudden realization that I’d been doing something wrong for the past year, but my clients have always been very patient and it’s always a productive shoot.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Topher North Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I think what sets my company apart is that it’s not. My business name is my name, because it’s just me handling everything from booking to location, from shooting to printing. I believe in having a unified mind and voice throughout the entire process, and giving clients the peace of mind of knowing exactly who to call for what.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m currently going to a school that focuses on fashion and advertising as it pertains to the marketable world. In 2020, I plan on adding styling and creative direction centered on specific markets.
