Meet Christopher Pick of Protectus Security in Irving

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Pick.

Christopher, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in North Carolina, the oldest of five boys in a family that loved sports. I played baseball all the way through college, and graduated with a degree in English – Communications. After I graduated I helped a friend from high school open up a restaurant in Durham. The business did really well, but after a year I was ready to move on. About a year later, I moved to Florida with a friend, and was recruited to do sales and marketing for a company that helped Fortune 500 clients with customer acquisition. I was terrible at sales and hated it, but somehow I stuck around long enough to figure it out and eventually became a partner in the company.

I founded Protectus back in 2009 with some of those same folks. We had previously represented a security company, and were eager to break into the industry. We loved the feeling of helping protect people and their homes, and felt that we could improve on the technology and customer service that most companies were offering. Our vision when we started was to create the security provider of choice in the region by providing our clients with the best technology and customer service while operating with integrity in all we did.

In 2013 I had the opportunity to buy my partners out and become the sole owner of Protectus. I was excited for the chance to run the company by myself, and I recommitted to my vision of becoming the security provider of choice in DFW. We have had the opportunity to help a lot of great clients and have grown our customer base by 400% since 2013.

In addition to technology that allows our clients to control their alarm system, lights, locks, thermostats and garage doors from their smart phone, I think my clients like that they can work directly with me and trust that I will take good care of them. We also have some of the best technicians in the industry, and I constantly get positive feedback from my clients about the technician who served them.

Of course, the best thing that has happened to me over the past 4 years is getting married to the love of my life, Brittany, last July. We met when we had the opportunity to co-lead a mission trip to Senegal in 2015 with a local non-profit organization that provides business training and small business loans in areas of poverty. I asked her out when we got back to Dallas and the rest, as they say, is history.

Has it been a smooth road?
I’m not sure starting a small business is ever a smooth road. My experience is that growing a business is one challenge after another: Initially learning the ins and outs of the security industry, managing and growing a team of people, and managing cash flow with a lot of upfront costs all present unique challenges. The security industry is very competitive, and it’s tougher than ever to stand out from the competition.

We design, sell, and install security and automation systems for residential and commercial customers throughout Texas. We specialize in wireless alarm/automation, video surveillance and access control systems. We are known for providing our clients with the best technology and customer service while operating with integrity in all we do. I’m most proud of our commitment to integrity – doing the right thing even when it isn’t convenient.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
DFW is a great market for security and automation. As I mentioned earlier, there is a lot of competition, but there are also many families and companies moving here every day and most of them understand the need for a good security system. The home automation and video market is exploding, and it is a great time to be an integrator. On top of that, Texas is a very business friendly state. There is nowhere else I would rather be!
