Today we’d like to introduce you to Cicily Pettigrew.
Cicily, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. I taught how to make biscuits by my Dad when I three years old. Growing up I always enjoyed cooking and art. So, when I graduated with an art degree from The University of North Texas at Denton, I took over the family business, Uncle Willie’s Pies, so my dad could retire.
Being a “girl boss” has been a part of my traits since childhood when I was selling candy at school. I use those same ‘hustle’ strategies now in my business whether it’s marketing a product or networking with fellow industry professionals.
I got to where I am today by working hard and staying focused on my goals of expanding the business and being able to support my family financially.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way? The road hasn’t been easy. I didn’t go get a bunch of loans when we first opened the store. That has its pros and cons, because we are not in debt from loans, but our cash flow is so great either, especially in our slower months. But, by God’s grace, we are still in business and pushing forward for bigger and greater things.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Uncle Willie’s Pies – what should we know? Uncle Willie’s Pies is a family-owned bakery, specializing in homemade desserts with a southern flair. We are known for “Uncle Willie’s Original Pecan Pie”. It was the first dessert we offered and is the most requested in our 22-year history.
I love telling the client’s story through desserts for weddings and events. That can be done by using their favorite flavor, o customizing a dessert that has a special meaning, or is displayed with the event colors. Anyone can make a good pie or cake. It’s pretty cool when the desserts are not only delicious but have a purpose or emotional connections to the client or event.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role? God deserves all of the credit, because without HIM, nothing would be possible. My parents had the vision to start the bakery so I have to thank them for passing down to me.
