Today we’d like to introduce you to Ciera Dervin.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always knew I wanted to be rich, literally since like second grade, I knew I wanted to live a lavish life. Although I had that part figured out, I didn’t know how I was going to reach that goal. My mama is super intelligent, she has her Masters and she was big on education. I’ve always been smart, in AP classes, school was a breeze to me, I knew I could do that lol. After high school graduation, of course, my mama wanted me to go off to college, I got into Louisiana State Univ, Stephen F Austin and actually went to Univ of Houston. But college just wasn’t for me, again it wasn’t hard, I just wasn’t into it at all.
Fast forward I eventually left school, came home and moved out on my own. I went to cosmetology school in 2013, unfortunately, I dropped out, ha. Beauty school drops out, I’m hanging around the wrong crowd, they’re unmotivated, no goals. I’m trying all kind of get rich schemes. Long story short got caught up in some stuff, learned from it grew from it.
Fast forward 2016 I go back to hair school and graduate, yay lol. I then went through a bad break up, found a hair plug, branded myself, rebranded myself, dealt with a lot of hurt and insecurities and birthed BOUJIE BEAUTY GANG! I did everything different, I kind of went into a shell and got in my bag. Every move I make for BBG is thought out and it shows, the audience and customers love it. I’m just getting started, this is only the beginning.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not, and anyone who says starting a business is easy Issa LIE! The main thing I used to struggle with most, is knowing who was on my team and if they were genuinely loyal. When trying to make a bold statement, people either prey on your downfall or want to stick around just in case you make it. I’ve been through the eating noodles and sandwich phase, the lonely nights, spending your last on an investment, all think is easy, part of the game. The hard part is keeping the snakes from around you.
Boujie Beauty Gang – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I myself, am a stylist. I am most known for caring for and growing natural hair. As the owner of BBG, we are best known for going beyond, doing extra. I chose Boujie Beauty Gang for a reason and I have to live by that. Nothing I do from photoshoots pop up shops etc, it will always be Boujie. The Boujieness of the company definitely sets us apart.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Me, personally I success is not money. Knowledge is success. Reaching your highest potential, being your best self and having the ability to help others and touch lives is success. Even when I touch 1 million dollars, unless I have helped my community and made a major mark, I haven’t reached success.
