Meet Claudio Gutierrez of Valens Project Consulting in Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Claudio Gutierrez.

Claudio, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I founded Valens Project Consulting in June of 2017 to support the engineering and efficiencies needs of smaller manufacturing and distribution companies in Texas. During my time in “Corporate America”, and especially through occasional consulting engagements I participated in, I came to realize that not all small- and medium-sized companies in these sectors have the need for dedicated engineering services, so Valens fills a temporary need on a recurring basis, at a fraction of the cost of traditional engineering departments. We started in Houston and have gradually expanded into the major cities in Texas, with plans for further expansion into neighboring states.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a roller-coaster of a ride! Making the leap from the typical career of an engineer to being a business owner quickly teaches you that you only “eat what you kill”, sort to speak, and that prospecting and networking are never-ending activities. One of the things that I have come to understand and fully embrace is that absolutely everything in business is sales, and that is something that is not emphasized enough in STEM careers. Luckily, I consider myself a people person, so I quite enjoy interacting with, relating to, and understanding the needs of our customers.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Valens Project Consulting – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Like I mentioned earlier, I started Valens to act as an engineering resource to companies that do not have a need for a full-time, in-house engineering department. Our fractional engineering services, along with our business model that emphasizes remote support as needed, eliminates the need for high overhead costs, and we pass these savings on to our customers. Additionally, we bundle our services with efficiency assessments of our customers’ operations, which leads to cost-avoidance that increases their bottom line. Because of this, we’ve been able to not only anticipate our customers’ needs but also react rapidly to urgent requests for services.

Our success means our customers succeed, but I believe that there’s something truly exceptional about Texas, the proof being that we’ve fared better than the rest of the country during the last couple of recessions, and that is something that we have definitely been able to leverage success in our mission to continue to support our customers.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I rather dislike repeating cliches and corny catchphrases, so I won’t say what is about to be understood from my following statement; I moved here from another state over a decade ago and I absolutely love Texas!

Having said that, I don’t want to disparage the places I’ve lived in before, but suffice to say that the amount of culture here, quality of the arts, the infrastructure, the friendliness of the people, the variety of restaurants, the history, and even how we can experience four seasons in a matter of a couple of days are among my favorite things.
