Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody Hoya.
Cody, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In 1951, Ralph and Muriel Pinkus founded NHG as a small nursery on nine acres of grassland along Northaven Rd. north of Dallas. They began with landscaping, but quickly included selling retail plants to anyone who would make the drive. With a commitment to quality and value for their customers, the nursery has grown into one of the most respected horticultural ventures in the area.
The company incorporated in 1969, and in 1972-1973, sons Jon & David Pinkus joined the business, making it a true family endeavor. Also in the early 1970’s, Ralph worked through the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce and the City of Dallas Park Department to create an Arboretum and Botanical Garden for Dallas that would demonstrate what homeowners could do in their own yard. In 1992 David Pinkus left the company to pursue other interests.
In September 2013, Ralph Pinkus passed away leaving a legacy of a more beautiful Dallas. The family and staff of North Haven Gardens continue to build on his legacy today.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
NHG has overcome numerous challenges along the way, from weather to market changes. We strive to stand out in a rapidly changing marketplace by focusing on providing plants and products suited to the north Texas growing area and engaging knowledgeable staff focused on our customers’ end success.
North Haven Gardens – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We’re a gardening destination in the DFW area, and we have a reputation for quality, variety, and knowledgeable staff members. Since 2014, we’ve added a gallery that showcases work from local artists and promotes a lifestyle enhanced by gardening and nature. We’ve also opened a cafe on site, in the heart of the garden center, that’s become tremendously popular among our patrons. We stock a huge variety of plants year-round as well as all the tools, supplies and products that gardeners here need to succeed.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest aspect of my 5-year tenure as General Manager at NHG has been watching the integration of the gallery and cafe with the existing well-known garden center. The process of merging the three concepts into an inspiring, horticulturally-driven destination has provided numerous opportunities to develop our employees and create enriching roles for them, and they have all shined in their many individual contributions.
