Today we’d like to introduce you to Colby Garza.
Colby, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After I graduated from the University of North Texas, my first job out was for a commercial real estate firm in Dallas. I worked there for seven months and had this urge to go on my own. Eventually, I left that company, but that’s when the story really began. I moved back in with my parents, which I’m sure is everyone’s dream! Just kidding. I applied around town and eventually was hired by two companies Raising Canes and Lowe’s. This was not an ideal situation, but I knew that it would let me have the flexibility to create my own company. While I worked at those two establishments, I would also do real estate full-time since I had my real estate license. My dad connected me with someone I could get a loan from so I did, and with that money, I built my first home. I would work at Lowe’s in the morning in the electrical department from 6am-12pm then drive to Raising Canes to work my 3pm-12am shift as a shift manager. On my day-offs, I would focus on my business and try to earn commissions from home sales. At this time, I would also be building my first house. I would run off of around 3 hours asleep a night if I were lucky, that would go on for around a year until I built and sold my second home. Once that happened I went full-time Garza Group. Now instead of putting 80 hours a week into multiple jobs, I use all that drive and focus into my own job. Being at those other jobs made me hungry for success and knew that I had to risk it in order to have the success that I wanted to have.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
If anything is a smooth road, I suggest you quit it, because at that point you’re too comfortable in life. My struggles was to find a bank to give me a loan. I would go weekly to a different bank, asking if they could lend me money to build my second home. I would get rejected weekly, but I knew that if I wanted anything in life, it would like several attempts. Every time I would go to the bank they would say ah oh okay, so you want a loan yet you’re $40,000 in student loan debt working two jobs. This didn’t make sense to banks especially since they deal with risk, and risk they do not like. Other struggles were for people to take me seriously since I was young in an industry that is run by older people. I had to show them by outworking them and providing something they didn’t have. Also, self-doubt due to family and friends thinking you’re crazy for leaving a corporate job to make your own company. Over and over again, I would hear people laughing when I would tell them my goals and aspirations. This was one of the hardest struggles since these people are supposed to support you and say you can do anything! I had to just put my head down and get to work!
Tell our readers more about your work, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I develop land, build a house on the land and sell it through my real estate brokerage. I’m known for giving a new affordable house with a luxury touch. My homes have a million-dollar finish out with a price that middle class can afford. I’m proud of my detail and quality. I know when I hand the keys to someone, they will cherish this house and raise their future family in it. If anything is wrong with the house, we immediately try and fix whatever is wrong. My integrity and honesty set me apart from others. If I wouldn’t live in the house, I build then why should someone else. I will give you 100% of me in that build and I know that.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m looking to educate people on building homes. I want to make sure that child in school can pull up my Instagram, youtube and etc and watch the process of building. The next generation knows how to start a business and learn from what I’m doing and not sell some mastermind plan. I really look forward to what’s next, because whatever it might be it will be huge. The only big change maybe ten years down the road would be to get into multifamily. I would love to build multifamily the way I build my homes with luxury details that people can afford.
