Today we’d like to introduce you to Colleen Karsnick.
Colleen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After I graduated high school, I went to cooking school and worked in restaurants, all positions in the restaurants and then eventually head pastry chef at them all the while doing cakes “on the side” until eventually I didn’t have time to go into the restaurants anymore because of my cake load!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No definitely not, the kitchens are mostly filled with men and a lot of them don’t appreciate a female being in there or being their superior. A lot of times I would be placed in a higher position than some of them because of my culinary arts degree or just my experience, either way, a lot of guys in the kitchen don’t like a female there. Those chef shows you see on tv like Hells Kitchen are pretty accurate, you get screamed at and called names a lot!! I even had one chef throw a steak on a plate over the pass at my head and that was pretty much it for me!!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Colleens Cakes story. Tell us more about the business.
Well I’ve been doing cakes for about 25 years now and my #1 flavor is my White Chocolate Mousse. It’s the very first flavor I started with and 99% of my brides get at least one tier with that flavor. I’m most proud that I’ve started this company by myself from nothing with just my talent and have made a name for myself over the years. I could have hired a team many years ago and grew the company but I prefer doing it myself so everything is consistent and exactly how it should be. I keep hearing stories about companies with too many employees and orders get mixed up for one person to another and someone ends up getting the wrong thing!! Luckily, I don’t have that problem!!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I collect Buddha statues and have somewhere around 50 right at this moment so I’m very much a do unto others kind of person. I believe in juju and karma all the way!!

Colleen’s cakes are truly amazing! She did our wedding cakes and now does my kids birthday cakes every year. We drive an hour each way to get them when I have lots of bakeries in my area. She is delightful and I always look forward to seeing her and her creations!
