Today we’d like to introduce you to Connor Thompson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Connor. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been interested in photography since I was 10. My dad was a professional wedding photographer who taught me the basics of photography on his old 35mm Canon AE-1. It quickly became a hobby we could both enjoy and is something we still do together today.
When I got to my sophomore year in high school, photography became available as an elective and I took it for three years as my art credit. When I got to college, I took photography as my fine art credit and started taking photos for friends.
After completing college, I didn’t know what I wanted to do and spent a brief period searching for my “calling” in life. Now, with the support from my wife and family, I’ve taken the leap to make photography my profession.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It isn’t always smooth sailing. When I decided to do photography professionally, I made the choice to only use recent work for my portfolio. That makes it hard because people want to see your work. You can have all the business cards, a website, and gear. If you can’t get clients, it can become difficult.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the C. Thompson Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m the main photographer for my small business, I love selling landscape prints, and that type of photography will always be a passion. However, my specialty is, what I call “personal photography.” From weddings and pregnancy announcements to senior and family photos, I love capturing moments people want to remember forever.
A lot of people offer concrete packages. I like meeting with clients, and potential clients, to discuss their budget and needs to come up with a personal photo package that’s right for them.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
The majority of my business comes through hard work. However, luck comes into play when people enjoy my photos and pass the word to the friends they constantly interact with. The majority of my marketing is word of mouth, so people passing a positive word is appreciated, and I guess a little lucky too.
