Today we’d like to introduce you to Conny van der Meer
Hi Conny, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My husband and I moved from The Netherlands to Dallas in 2022. We came here as expats for my husband’s job (he works in tech) and I gave up my job at the local government before we moved. I didn’t mind giving up my fulltime job – I actually felt like I now had some freedom to ‘do what I wanted’ which at first was blogging and Youtube. And so I started blogging about spiritual stuff (which has always been an interest of mine) and making videos about our expat life in Dallas. However, at the start of this year, I felt like lots of the content I posted was ’empty’ and becoming boring. I wanted to do a job where I could actually help people in a way that felt like I used my unique individual talents. The first step was diving even deeper into who I really am.
And pretty quickly after that, I became a Human Design reader. I accidentally came across a workshop about Human Design online and it instantly clicked with me. I just knew this is what I wanted to do. I studied philosophy in university, so it resonated with all the life questions I (and many of my clients) have. For me, it’s the perfect combination between life philosophy and spirituality. And now I get to explain to people who they truly are, how their energy works and how they best use it everyday – which is a huge blessing.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In a sense, it has been a smoother road than I expected. Of course, putting myself out there and openly sharing about such a ‘woo woo’ subject is always scary. But I’m glad my previous Youtube channel already pushed me over that edge, and taught me how to not care about others’ opinions. Though I still feel awkward when people who call themselves scientific or ‘down to earth’ ask me what I do for a living. That judgement might be the hardest thing so far. And the self-doubt. The more I know, the more I learn what I don’t know – Socrates was right, haha – and that makes me insecure sometimes.
I do feel that this is something which I am meant to do, which really helps in trusting the process. I am so aligned with who I am now, and reading my own Human Design also gives me guidance on how to approach my business. My clients kind of organically found me online, but I also use Instagram ads to share about my readings. However, I do feel that most of my clients find me via word of mouth, which is a huge compliment.
In my third month of being a reader, my schedule was completely booked. Somehow that was a peak moment and I’m very proud to have such success so early on. I’m currently in a phase of taking a step back, reflecting and learning again, so I’m happy to have a few readings a week and use the rest of my time to educate myself more and dive into Human Design even deeper.
My goal is to be one of the best and biggest Human Design readers in The Netherlands, but I also wanna be loyal to my American audience. I’m sure many Dutch people would think this is too ambitious or delusions of grandeur, but I really feel like this is my calling. I want to help as many people as I can. Eventually, I dream about a society where talking about (Human Design) subjects like purpose, emotions and intuition is a part of daily life.
We’ve been impressed with ConnyvanderMeer, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a Human Design reader, so I basically explain to people who they are in their essence, based on their Human Design chart. Human Design is a complex system of old spiritual traditions, which helps us gain more insight into our energy and what we’re here to do on planet Earth. Your chart is based on your moment of birth, so Human Design does not consider your traumas, conditioning or learned habits. It basically calls us back to who we are born to be, not who society made us into.
My personal focus is to help people fully embrace who they are, and accept all parts of their being. Human Design is not only a tool to get to know yourself better, but it can also really aid us in healing and loving ourselves. I feel that everyone, but especially women in this day and age can use a little help with this.
What sets me apart from other Human Design readers is firstly that I studied philosophy, so I have a particular way of thinking about life’s questions and explaining difficult concepts. My biggest talent has always been translating complex ideas into easy-to-understand language. Also, I’m Dutch, but live in Dallas so I can give readings in both Dutch and English – which allows for the wide variety of clients. This actually teaches me a lot about people and culture as well. And I’m a projector – so I’m a ‘seer and guide’ for others. Those who are already into Human Design might see how this is also a credential, haha!
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is living a life that is mine, that makes ME happy, and to do that in an authentic and aligned way. I feel like I’ve accomplished this (though there is always more to learn) and I would love to help others do this too. Human Design can be a vessel for this. If I help individuals to remember who they truly are and how beautiful, unique, worthy and necessary they are in today’s world, we can change the world one happy person at a time.
I feel that many people are living a life that is not made for them, which makes them struggle a lot more than they need to. For example, in today’s society being productive and working hard are high held values. Just think about the ‘girl boss’ and hustle culture we seem to glorify often. Human Design shows us that only two of the five types (generators and manifesting generators) actually have the energy to keep up with this way of life, and the other three types (manifestors, projectors and reflectors) don’t even have the consistent energy that is needed for long workdays and ‘working more to earn more’. This latter group can try to work all day and hustle, but will never reach their personal success in that way and will probably burn themselves out.
This is just a small example, but once we realize that we don’t have to all be the same and live the same life, that different lives work for different people, and learn to fully love and embrace this uniqueness – life can be so much better, lighter, and happier. Keeping up with others isn’t what human beings are made for. We compliment each other like colors, and embracing this is the only way for us to truly thrive, in my opinion.
