Meet Courtney Zuber of Cone Flower Designs in Salado

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Zuber.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Courtney. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Cone Flower Designs was established in 2018 after I graduated from Texas A&M University. I had a few friends getting married who asked me to do their wedding flowers and I was so honored by that! I talked to my parents about it and they said: “you’re going to work so hard under someone else’s name, why don’t you start your own?” My parents have their own company and I knew it was in me to one day own my own business but I didn’t think it would be so soon! I was 23 at the time and it scared me to take a leap of faith but what did I have to lose? So, I decided to start my company, Cone Flower Designs, and haven’t looked back since. I just celebrated two years in business a few months ago. The past two years have been the most fun, stressful, overwhelming and enjoyable time of my life. I definitely wouldn’t be here without my family and friends supporting me and always encouraging me to keep going.

Has it been a smooth road?
Owning a business isn’t easy but it’s the most rewarding thing to have. You’re going to make mistakes but it’s how you handle them that keep you going. When I was 23 and just starting out, I didn’t know everything or where to even began but it was the people I surrounded myself with that I leaned on. I reached out to past teachers from high school, friends/professors from college to help guide me and boy did they. I’m forever grateful for every single person who has helped me get to where I am today because, without them, I wouldn’t be here.

Throughout this journey, the biggest thing I’ve learned is to trust your gut and go for it. Even if you fail, you did it the way you thought was best. You have to learn from your mistakes and not be afraid to ask for help. The biggest struggle I had in the begin was trying to build that trust with clients and tell them, “I’ve got you. I know I’m 23 years old but trust me and you won’t be disappointed.” Once I had a few weddings under my belt with my own company, everything opened from there. People saw that I could handle it and exceed their expectations. You have to build those relationships with your clients and be there for them, even outside of the floral world. Be a friend to lean on during those low moments and tell them their doing great.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Being the owner of a company, you wear many hats. I do everything from ordering flowers, filling buckets, processing, designing, emails, proposals, consultations, inventory, cleaning, organizing, etc. The list never ends but I love it so much that I don’t look at it like work. Cone Flower Designs specializes in wedding and event florals. Lately, because of Covid-19, we’ve started selling wrap bouquets locally and expanding our ever-growing list of items we offer. The thing I’m most proud of as a company is how far we’ve come with only being two years old. Connecting to other vendors and getting to share our talents is incredible. Social media has played a huge part in growing my company. I love getting messages/comments and getting to interact with people who really care about what we’re doing. I’ve made so many friends who I’ve never even met in real life just because they found us through a hashtag or one of their friends tagging them in a post. It’s truly been incredible.

The one thing that sets us apart from others is how much we truly care about our clients. I do everything I can to really work with someone’s budget, no matter what it might be. We educate our clients on the flowers, greenery, anything that is being used on their big day and how we might be able to repurpose ceremony florals into the reception so we can stay in budget. Education is key! Most brides have never planned a wedding and have so much information being thrown at them. Taking the time to talk them through everything step by step is very helpful and comforting. We want them to feel as if they can ask us anything even if it isn’t related to florals. We’re here to help throughout the whole process!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Salado is the best city for a floral business. We’re centrally located in Texas. We’re about 50 minutes from Austin and Waco. It’s the best of both worlds. We truly love being here and our little town has been so supportive of us being here!
