Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Vaitkus.
Crystal, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I had been in the restaurant business for over 20 years. It was a dead end job and weighed on me physically and mentally. After an on the job injury that left me bedridden for several days, I went and saw a chiropractor. I got the works! I got isolated muscle massages, acupuncture, and an adjustment. I walked out as nothing had ever happened. So intrigued that I was cured without medication, I looked into it further.
I became licensed in California (where I lived at the time) and worked in a spa for less than six months. I wanted to work and work on more athletic minded individuals. So I found employment at a gym called Equinox. I worked there for several years, working my way to a management position. I can remember thinking, this is a good time to be able to financially make mistakes and take risks without ever having to lose my potential future business. I used the big corporate dollar to learn how to structure my business still as of today.
Has it been a smooth road?
Well, I ended up moving to Texas in 2017. I thought it was going to be smooth sailing considering my work ethic and all I had learned back home. I took residence as a part time employee at a local gym in Plano. They over worked me and under paid me. I was growing a very negative mindset towards honing my craft and starting to feel disgruntled at what was so passionate to be a mere six months prior. And this was shortly after fighting to get my licensed transferred from California. That took a total of six months. I exhausted what little savings I had, but kept ongoing. I had managed to save up enough money to buy two t-shirts with my business logo name, business cards, a car magnet, and splurge $100 on a website. I wore those t-shirts EVERYWHERE I went. I didn’t have any money to go out, so I would just walk around the shop of Legacy and strike up conversations. It worked! I was able to gain new clients. After challenging that job on their pay structure, they fired me. I was mortified and humiliated. This was just after thanksgiving 2017.
December 1, 2017, I found a room in a chiropractor’s office rent free he just took a mere 50% of my earnings. Which at the time, I had zero extra money to spend on retail rent so I went for it. I promised myself I’d never fill out a job application ever again. Here I am, two years and growing!
Please tell us about your business.
I’m a sports massage specialist. I’m into any person who is active and wants to STAY that way. You don’t necessarily have to play sports, but just be an active and healthy individual that does not take their body for granted. I’m completely against western medicine and prescription medications. I take pride in being able to teach people to better understand and listen to their bodies. We are so disconnected as a society because we are over stimulated and over stressed. I am a certified personal trainer, certified in functional movement, and by spring I’ll be certified for nutritional coaching. As it all goes hand in hand. Teaching people to eat well, move well, and live GREAT is what Crystal Massages is all about!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Dallas because the people are so, so nice here. Everyone is so helpful and is so unbelievably giving. I feel very much respected and appreciated here. I didn’t have a budget for marketing, but now I don’t need to. I’m a 100% referral based and SO grateful for it. It makes me strive to do and be more! I don’t care for is all the construction. It’s a bit much.
